EVENT #3: AN EXECUTION OF SORTS

THE EXECUTION
As if performing a vicious mockery for what should be a somber day, the sun shines brightly in the sky. The rays of sun catch the iron brackets that hold up the gallows that have been erected overnight for the occasion, the gentle breeze causing the noose to swing ominously. Public executions do not happen frequently in Thorne, so a crowd gathers in strained anticipation of the grim sentence.

The welcome guests, who have up until this point been free to come and go within the confines of the castle, have been mandated to view the execution. It is meant to serve both as an example of Thorne’s power as well as a lesson to those who might think to try the same. The courtyard, which was buzzing with quiet murmurs, turns silent as Ambrose strides up the wooden steps of the gallows, flanked by two guards and a haggard-looking Jonathan Sims, arms bound behind him. As the guards march their charge to the trapdoor that will serve as executioner and position the noose around his neck, Ambrose turns to address the crowd that has gathered- willfully or not.

“Citizens of Thorne, our esteemed welcomed guests, it is with disappointment and a heavy heart that we’ve gathered to see to the execution of one of the very guests we sought aid from in our time of need. In a selfish and distrustful act, I was attacked, an action I cannot abide.”

He turns halfway toward his charge. “Jonathan Sims, you are charged with assault and intention of lethal harm. The punishment is to be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May the gods have mercy on your soul.”

Ambrose raises his arm to signal the executioner to pull the lever to release the trapdoor beneath Jon’s feet, steely expression locked on the prisoner’s face one last time.

MEANWHILE
Several miles away, atop a hill in the forest, two figures meet between portals. Oliver, tall and lithe, steps out to stand next to a petite waif of a woman who looks at him with a familiar smile. Her voice is lilting like a songbird’s when she speaks up, turning her gaze back over the city.

“Find out anything good?”

He hums softly, his hands clasped behind his back. “Two dozen prisoners, give or take. The one I met was very grateful for our assistance.”

“That’s good. Perhaps her gratitude will endear our cause to them.”

With a nod, he takes a deep breath and then sighs. “It’s time, Elizabeth,” he says, lifting one hand to open a new portal.

She nods and raises her arms above her head, eyes closing in concentration. Her arms begin to glow green while the grass around her begins to ripple in rings. The very ground seems to surge with power that radiates outward from her, and it isn’t long before the castle and the town are engulfed in a heavy air of intense magic. It courses from her in shockwaves.

Satisfied, Oliver steps through the portal.

In the wake of the magic flood, the walls of the dungeons seem to shudder for a long moment, and the doors suddenly clink open. No guards come rushing in to shut them, and in fact, all ambient noise in the dungeons seems to stop as the whole of the people of Thorne freeze in place. The hall becomes lit by daylight as a portal opens at the end of it, showing them the crowd of welcomed guests and Jon alone on the platform.

In the portal, alone stands Oliver, hand offered to the prisoners in welcome. His smile doesn’t reach his eyes, though this seems to be by nature rather than intention.

“Please come with me.”

CHOICES
Everything is happening quickly.

Once through the portal to the execution yard there's a moment of chaos and confusion at the sudden arrivals and then it stops. Everything and everyone has stopped, save for the guests, the prisoners, and the two mages who have come to their aid. Guards freeze in place. The attended mages are still as statues. Banners lifted by the wind remain where they are and even the noose hanging from the gallows stills.

"Time for them is halted." Oliver addresses the assembled, his voice projected to be heard but his tone calm. "It will remain so for one hour, no more. An hour is all you have to make your choices. Remain here in Thorne, or take a portal to either Solvunn or the Free Cities. The portals cannot be traced by the Thorean authorities, so no need to fear them giving chase.”

Elizabeth emerges from a portal behind him, which closes as she enters the yard. They both raise an arm and two white circles spread through the air, showing new towns in the distance on the other side. There is an ethereal glow around them.

“The Free Cities are martially powerful and seek to destroy the Singularity,” Oliver narrates, gesturing at one of the portals. “Solvunn is reclusive and claims neutrality, both in politics and in regard to the Singularity. I advise that you think hard about your choice. Travel between cities is not exactly easy."

He turns back to the crowd with an almost apologetic smile. “I'm sorry you don't have more time to make this decision. We’ll meet again.”

Opening a third portal with the wave of her arm, Elizabeth, who has not spoken a word, gives the group a wink and leaves with Oliver. Their portal closes behind them, leaving everyone to begin making moves.

Now is the time to make serious choices. Two portals stand in the courtyard, one courtesy of Oliver and one of Elizabeth. The Free Cities and Thorne are enemies, Solvunn watching both to see where the cards end up falling. None trust one another, none work with one another beyond trade through middle-men in Solvunn. The clock is ticking.

Someone should probably get Jon out of that noose.

Coraline meets Sam's eyes readily: she can't help carry Jon or lessen Jon's fear, but she can flip her dagger into a backhanded grip and grip the rope remains with the other, and dart off the stage ahead of the two men, hackles raised in case anyone tries to stop them, movements dead silent.

Jon nods, limping as he moves with Sam but he's looking around, past Sam and Coraline both. He feels like he hasn't taken a breath since he stepped outside, chest tight and painful. There are more people now, he thinks, but it's hard to tell with the milling and sudden confusion.

He could Know, though. He can feel it, that heavy pressure in the back of his head again. And he lets it only the tiniest bit open, but it snaps his head up. He reaches out, to snag the back of Coraline's jacket if he can.

"Martin's here. I'm not leaving without him."

Sam pulls one of Jon's arm around his neck, even when Jon admits he can run. Sam is okay to walk him down and even all the way to the portals, if he needs to. He just knows Jon can't stay here, especially not when there's a clock ticking down.

He walks them both off the edge of the platform to get them down, feeling Jon tense at his side. He pauses, just long enough to see Jon looking elsewhere, and lets his eyes wander the crowd. Bucky's out there, others too, and he can see some other faces of prisoners starting to join the crowd. They're out. Sam's mind spins for a moment before he refocuses, tightening his grip on Jon's side.

"Hey- whoa, it's okay. Whoever those two are opened the dungeon up, too. I'm sure he'll be out here in a second." He shifts their weight again, tries to start walking. "If we don't find him by the time we make it to the portals, I'll go chase him down. Okay?"

There's a part of Sam that recognizes he will shove Jon through one of these portals if he has to, but they're not at that point yet, and he can't fault him for needing Martin to come along first. He looks ahead to Coraline as if to try and tell her to go search him down, but he's not sure it translates, given the chaos around them.

Jon's tug at her layers doesn't catch her, but it gets her attention and makes her stop before she gets more than two steps away, waiting with an obvious impatience as she bounces on the balls of her bare feet.

"We can come back for your boyfriend later," she says in a clipped tone, an uncharacteristic brusqueness. "We need to get out of here before that timer pops, we can't waste time if you don't know where he is right now." Becaude if they don't, and they get stuck here, Coraline really will lose it. "You can't help him if you're dead."

"He's here," he repeats, eyes scanning over the crowd. All of his eyes are open now and wide, which means he's pulling away from Sam's arm because he has eyes all the way down his spine under his shirt. "We have time- some time." He keeps moving, but it's not a run,

"We'll get out in time," he tells Coraline. "Obviously I can't stay here. But if Ambrose knows who Martin is, I can't risk leaving him here hostage." Because he'd walk right back into that noose for him. And he's trying, but he can't see if the High Mage knows or not. Looking back without turning, the blue eye on the back of his neck narrowed with dislike, he stares at the frozen Ambrose as they leave him behind.

He lets Jon go only because he gets the feeling that even fighting back won't change things. And when he does, that is when he notices the eyes. Okay. Well. That's happening then. Sam's eyes go from Coraline to Jon then back to the pockets of chaos around them, feeling the time tick down.

"I'll go get him." He says it like he's decided it, but then turns his attention back to them both. "You two go to the portals and wait for him there. I'll go find him and send him your way. But only-" Sam looks pointedly at Jon, and then Coraline. "If you two make it through in time. I know you know, or whatever, but I'm serious. Wait for Martin but then get through the portal. Okay?"

They aren't orders, necessarily, but if there's a little Captain America woven in there, Sam can't really help it.

Coraline looks back at Sam with her chin tilted up, her mouth a thin line, but she still nods, moving to step next to Jon. She has to take a moment to drape the salvaged rope around her neck but then she grabs his wrist (doing her best not to jam a finger into one of his eyes).

"They said we have an hour. You've got thirty minutes. Otherwise I'm dragging him through without either of you." And even just staying that long rubs her the wrong way, she keeps expecting someone to jump her, trying to catch her and keep her here and as much as she likes Jon she will dropkick his own wishes in a heartbeat if it comes to that.

But she can't help but add, before it gets aimed at her: "Don't do anything reckless."

Jon can't help a soft snort at that last shot, even as on-edge as he is. It should be him going after Martin, but the guard's kick to the back of the knee means he's the slowest of the three of them.

"Thirty minutes," he agrees. "We'll meet you midway between the two."

He is the slowest of the three of them, and Sam had already been planning on heading back that way anyway. He's not sure he trusts Jon to actually get his butt back here anyway, especially when he's not moving at top speed, so Sam is thankful he doesn't have to argue too much more to get them both to agree.

At Coraline's comment, Sam simply salutes, because she's right to be uneasy and he already does feel better knowing that she's someone he can trust to get them through, whether Jon wants to go or not.

"I'll have him there in twenty. Scout's honor."

And then Sam is sprinting off back to the dungeons with very little else said.
