The point being, there are plenty of dark corners in which to hide, and when the acolytes show up today, Steve notices how Ciri practically melts into one of those dark spots.
She's coiled up like a snake herself, ready to strike, and while she may not have breathed a word to anyone about this plan (or maybe she did; she's been sticking close to Geralt when she's not off exploring), Steve makes a split second decision and moves to join her in a crouch.
He isn't the sneakiest, but he's a lot better than he used to be at this sort of thing (thanks, Natasha) and they have the natural darkness of the cave working in their favor in this case.
If he were to guess, he'd assume that Ciri has already identified which of the acolytes is the weakest link. When he speaks, it's barely above a whisper. ]
If you want me to pull one aside, offer some kind of distraction...
