"I know how you feel. Without my magic, it would be easy to become a burden."

Istredd also just hates the feeling of being disconnected from Chaos. He knows it's still there but it is out of reach too. He may be older but his experience has been mostly sheltered. He went from research to research, walking the world but in safe situations, always with his Chaos at hand. He doesn't have skills, but he does have determination.

"But if we don't want to be dead weight, we have to choose not to be. Do what you can, even if it seems like it's small. Gather plants, look for places to hunt or get water, report if you've seen strange things in this space or heard anything, keep your eyes out for anything of interest. Support others, keep your head together."

These are obviously all things that Istredd has been repeating to himself. It sounds rehearsed because in a way it is since it's been his mantra of a kind since he got here. Ways in which to be helpful rather than feeling helpless and useless. Ways to keep himself sane when he felt like he was starting to drift.
