There's significantly more blood than anything else. Animal, I assume. I wonder if it mixes with anything else here as part of whatever Josselyn has been doing to either keep something in or keep others out. Perhaps both.

This looks like some sort of parasite. A cross between a parasite and a leech, stored in blood.
