[It doesn't sound dumb; in fact, it makes perfect sense, at least if he's interpreting what Blake means by that. Having just gotten finished working with one of the most inept and corrupt police departments he's ever had the displeasure of encountering, Jayden very much understands the issue of finding oneself out of place if they're committed to actually doing their job the right way.
Blake is correct, though, in that he's distracted from prying more--for now anyway, he'll keep this in mind for later--by the prospect of a return to the surgical attempts. Although it's only been a few minutes at most since they took a break, it's enough time that the tunnel vision he'd had about removing the thorns has subsided a little, leaving him with at least the slightest sense of thinking maybe this isn't the smartest idea.
However, it definitely doesn't outweigh the desire to get the thorns out, so he lets Blake take his arm again and is glad for the question, because it serves as a good distraction from the pain he's starting to feel a bit more sharply once again.]
I'd uh... I'd just finished one. A few days earlier. It was a serial killer; we caught him and found his last victim before it was too late.
[It's a very condensed version of the tale, both because it's harder to concentrate now and because the story's just a complicated mess. But it's one he's been thinking about a lot since finding himself in this pit, which is something he doesn't really mean to talk about, but soon finds himself saying anyway.]
He'd killed eight times before. Left them in a hole that'd fill up with rainwater over a few days. I'd neva' really thought about what that woulda' been like. Waitin' for help that didn't come.
cw for mentions of child murder

[But he's certainly thinking about it now.]
