Kaz is cleaned up. Scrubbed to within an inch of his life, pale skin still pinked from the heat of the water and the scrubbing as if he could erase the fears and the panic that had settled into his skin like his own heartbeat. They'd gotten out and that's what matters, but then Jesper is taken in, and after the close call with conscription, he's not certain he'll return.
He'd been unable to sit, to settle in, standing on the far side of the bed and watching the door open with sharp eyes. Jesper's back but that doesn't mean he's theirs. It doesn't mean it's for good and he knows it.
He glances at Inej, both at her words and to watch what she does. He's not sure she's right in those words. Perhaps not to them but the echo of it is something they might well feel for a long time, and that scares him as well.
As much as he worries what Jesper will do after what's happened. It's not only the watch and the governing forces he has to worry about but what Jesper will do after someone had foolishly not chosen the gunslinger when given the choice.
So he stands and he watches Jesper, watching what he is going to do now what more he might say.
