( Believe it or not, that answer seems to actually... makes sense to him. Eases some of the tension out, as he reluctantly understands and accepts it. God knows he's been shot at his fair share of times, by people on varying degrees of the 'actually wanting him dead' spectrum. Back home in the very near future, one such guy will become one of his closest allies, to Jack's deep, deep consternation.
The point is, life is weird. Interpersonal relationship dynamics are weird. He's rarely ever had a good, healthy one himself.
As a wise man once said: sometimes it just be like that.
