The ground had just started to even out and he thinks he sees more figures up ahead - that portal they'd spoken of, maybe? He eyes it in relief and is about to turn to tease Hilda about her lizard comment.
But then something shifts in the air. Birds take to the air behind them in panicked flocks, their cries filling the air in a sudden chaotic flurry that sounds almost deafening after the otherwise subdued hush of a snow-covered mountain. He spins around, worried one of the monsters had perhaps followed them down the mountain. But the sight of what looks like a storm kicked up and moving down the mountainside is a far different - and more dangerous - threat.
He stares up at it in horror, knowing it's heading right for them and he doesn't know if there's enough time to get out of its path. But he turns anyway, hastily pushing Claude and Hilda forward, catching Petra's gaze, his own wide with a panic he rarely others see. ]
