There is a moment when the anger falters, when Jesper seems to understand with some clarity what is going on. There is true regret that flickers in gray eyes, almost like he is a second away from apologizing, a second away from de-escalating this fight too. Neither of them intended it to go this far and they've never fought before.
But he is being irrational, he is hurt and not chosen and sure why not abandonment issues on top of it, why not everything terrible he's been feeling for the past few weeks or the past eighteen years suddenly piled up all at once. Only moments ago he'd been teary-eyed and begging, and he is teary-eyed again, but he clenches his jaw, goes cold. Cold like he's been for weeks.
Jesper walks over and puts the letter down next to Mat's bed instead of destroying it, in case he needs both of them. He lingers maybe a second or two by the door, as if expecting him to change his mind, but before he can, he's gone.
But not without slamming the door very hard behind him, obviously. That is required.
