Deflection is her initial reaction; surely he's just saying that. There had to be other more significant things that had kept him going down there, Claude's safety as well as his own amongst them. There's also a good natured joke in there — if he thought about the snow in Faerghus did that act like a grounding mechanism, sort of like the equivalent of an ice bath for the mind? But she bites it back. Now doesn't seem like an appropriate time.

With no where else to go she has no choice but to sit there and accept his words. What was it Holst had said once? There was growth in the discomfort? Hilda's gaze stays firmly focused on their hands. ]


It helped me too. I had Petra there of course, but — [ An admission that his absence had been more than just physical is on the tip of her tongue but it tangles in the knot of other feelings she's ignored the last month. It feels too exposing to say that she had felt it in her heart, a tangible absence she could not fill if she had tried.
