[ The words are mostly muttered under his breath as he rubs a hand over his face. ]
The cultists - acolytes, whatever they were - were almost impossible to tell between. They all wore the masks and did their best to keep themselves pretty indistinguishable between one another, so it was really hard to get an idea of their numbers because of it. I know several of us fought with them, and several of them we killed when we fought them off to escape. The monsters. There was only one really big one along the ceiling, I think. People took to calling it the bone serpent, but I don't think it was actually a snake. It was hard to actually see it, with how dark in there it was.
And there was some type of creature that skittered along the ceiling. It would drop down when it heard prey below it and I know for sure we killed it a few times and trapped it another. But there was only ever one up there at a time. We tried to figure out if it was the same one and it just returned each time, or they had multiples and only ever let one loose at a time. Although that didn't seem to match up with everything else they had running around down there.
Honestly, we spent more time fighting them than we ever did the acolytes, although people still tried, when the opportunity presented itself. Usually, when the cultists showed up in the pit, it was in numbers and wielding whatever magic they had that weakened and disoriented us. And there wasn't a set schedule, so it made it harder to lay a trap or an ambush of any kind.
