[“Eghhh” is not usually the ideal response when Henry Creel asks someone if they like spiders, but at least it’s honest. Simple, in line with the rest of his thoughts — inlaid with what he can sense is a constant thrum of hunger in the background, only dim and not currently prominent.
A simple mind means one that is easy to follow. From spiders, to Claire, to bees and their houses, to bees in houses, doing things bees cannot do.
It reminds him of a child’s mind. A thought process that moves in a straight line, instead of spiderwebbing outward into almost too many fragments.
Speaking of a spider’s web:]
Spiders make interesting homes, too.
[He offers Nanaue an image for his mind’s eye: a large, gossamer example of an orb weaver’s web, strung between two trees and shining under the sun.]
Or even…
[And then the image of being given a basket full of glass jars by another Summoned (it’s Wanda), and within those glass jars with holes poked atop their lids, rests leaves and twigs and a single, different spider housed in each.]
