That's the thing with Kell. He wants to learn. He just needs good teachers. People who he feels safe enough with to try new things and mess them up horribly on his way to mastery, but who also challenge him enough so he doesn't grow distracted and arrogant.
It's a difficult balance, but it's blatantly obvious to anyone paying attention that Istredd checks both of those conditions perfectly. As much as he likes to think about himself as powerful mage, Kell is very young and most of what he has is potential. He has some spectacular feats, and blunders, on his account, but all those were under pressure. Not something readily translatable into regular practice. He hasn't been given a chance to learn from his mistakes so he keeps making new.
Kell springs to his feet right after Istredd's suggestion. Clear evidence to the fact that I wouldn't hurt for him to learn some patience too.
