"Your commander was a smart man then. It's a mistake too many make. They assume that since they make a plan, that's how it will work. They tend to forget the human factor most of all," he points out, warming to the conversation and not merely storytelling.
"No plan can count on the way others will react. You can guess when planning, and certainly have contingencies, but that still can't account for everything some fool might do in the name of appeasing another, or merely showing off."
There's a hint of fondness there. He has learned to appreciate that human element more than he has before.
Kaz is quiet a moment though, considering that.
"I admit, I never saw it much as character, but maybe that is on the inside unable to look in. Some are just meant to bear the weight and carry the darkness, and if it means they can carry it for others as well, then so be it. Some just have no other place in life, even when the story's over."
Not that he wouldn't look for the next story and take that leap when the time came, but that was a moot point now that they're here.
