[Mat spends a fair bit of time by the stables himself. He just likes horses. He hasn't bothered with one of his own, but there's certain castle mounts he's particularly fond of and borrows often.
He's on his way back, to get in his theorbo practice for the day, when he witnesses the same sight as Lucifer and stops up short. He knows he's not the source of this.]
You alright?
[He raises his voice to call out, not inclined to move from where he stands.]

Hellhounds aren't white.
Hellhounds are also invisible to most entities, so he calls out as he backs up slowly.] Can you see them?
[The rumors he's caught didn't include hounds. And the rift closes after two more paw out behind the first, before Lucifer could even consider shoving his face into it. But he's been stuck on another side of a rift before, he likely wouldn't risk it a second time.]

[Mat identifies them as deer hounds simply because he's read descriptions of the Andorian deer hounds bred in the capital. White with chestnut ears. Just like these beasties.
Red eyes, however, were never mentioned. Red eyes are usually not good things. Not natural things. That sets him a bit on edge, much as he likes dogs.]
Hard to miss, really. You sure you're alright?

[He's not really a dog person. He had one that he loved and cherished and she's dead, because some dumb demon thought to use her as a distraction and while sure it could've worked out for Lucifer in the long run, it didn't, so now he's just mad about it.
Oh wait he was supposed to be clarifying that he was alright.] Just, if they were hellhounds, you wouldn't be able to see them. Did you hear anything about those rifts? [He is not taking his eyes off the hounds and trying very hard to keep moving back in a way that doesn't have them circling. He doesn't trust flying, doesn't trust that it won't send them into a frenzy.]

[Mat crouches down and whistles low, holding out a hand for one of the hounds. It's not as though they've come charging through with fangs bared and hackles up. Nothing in their demeanor or body language says they're any threat.]
And I heard a bit. You know how it is, tavern talk. Nothing solid or trustworthy.
[His attention is well and truly on the dogs now. Poor things. They obviously aren't a breed that lives in Thorne, he's seen all sorts of hunting and house hounds about. Never ones like these. Whatever's happened, the animals are displaced. Light knows he can sympathize.]

Lucifer's often a kill first maybe consider things after, so he's shifting like a bird about to take flight when Mat goes to approach them, expecting the worst.] I couldn't see anything beyond the rift. I wonder if they were sent here by someone.

[Mat keeps his slow approach, noting the movement of the animals. With his other hand he reaches into his coat pocket, pulling out a bit of jerky he'd been planning to snack on later.
There's always a very quick way to win over a dog. Any sort of dog.]
There we are, you're alright aren't you? Course you are.
[His eyes flick up to Lucifer as he holds the treat out, catching the nearest of the hounds' attention.]
Just relax. If you get all restless and all, they will, too. Trust me, I know animals. And these pretty four legged friends are clearly domesticated, which means we can't just let'em run loose. Dogs used to living with a person don't fare well when let loose on their own.
no subject
Well.] You can't just put some mystery animal to some unsuspecting home like everyone is going to thrive. [Sure he likes chaos and bloodshed but.] If something goes wrong guess where fingers are gonna be pointing.
no subject
Oh yes, these are terribly mysterious and dangerous animals. Look at them. So frightening.
[Whatever they might be, it's clear to him that they're domestic and used to people. Some sort of people, anyway. They remind him a bit of the baker's dogs, back home.]
Look, I can't keep a dog, let alone a small brace of them. I would if I could. Always wanted a dog of my own. But as I share a single bedroom, least I can do is help find them someplace safe.

Make him learn a lesson.
It's likely best for both of them that doesn't happen. Lucifer can't heal and the basic first aid lessons he got from Nadine doesn't cover severed limbs, though he imagines if he messaged her in a panic she'd have something to offer him.
But he'd likely reach out to Rhy first.] Fine. [He doesn't have to like it. Don't look at him and you won't see him rolling his eyes.] Do you have anywhere in mind?
