[ vash shifts one foot behind him when nero gestures at him to keep clear. he wears his confusion plainly-- how exactly is nero going to test where it goes from all the way over there? but his bewilderment evaporates the moment nero severs his own arm. even before nero cocks his remaining arm back, vash understands, his head whipping around to watch the rift.
it's like a missile, the crack of it breaking the sound barrier echoing around them both. but vash sees it, too, when it meets some invisible barricade, and is shot back the way it came. he moves before he can think.
vash snatches it out of the air, wooden fingers closing around the wrist of it. he fully expects it to wrench him backwards from the force of the momentum, sending him sprawling and tumbling through sludgy dirt and grass-- except it doesn't. instead there is a gruesome splintering noise, like the sound of bone breaking, and he flinches when he feels fragments of birch ricochet against the side of his face.
he turns to look at what remains of his prosthetic; it's half gone, shattered from the elbow down.
