He didn't go back to the mill for help either - he had no idea if the beast would follow him back there, so that wasn't an option even if he needed immediate help. But he could've messaged someone, either one of them would've worked. Then the castle would have the information about the rift either way, and - hopefully - would've been quick to send soldiers to deal with the beast. It was a risk to count on being able to drag himself through the Gray Space that far and still having to strength to open it again.
He just didn't think to message either of them. In a roundabout way, maybe that mistake is why he's still breathing now. ]
