[ It's a very good thing he and Lucifer went together, and Yennefer came with them for dealing with the monster on top of him. Lucifer wanted to help him get it because he knew that it was from their sphere and that meant something. They didn't expect him to be the same threat. It worked out, barely.

Istredd doesn't know Viktor outside of that he invented the trackers for the Pit and what he said on the network. He's not a very trusting person currently, especially for the types that experiment on things, but it's up to Geralt since he likely knows more about him.

What he didn't expect was for Geralt to say that and for it to be sincere and for it to hurt. This is part of the struggle, the lingering pain. He and Yennefer shared the loss although hers was worse with Tissaia too, but his complicated feelings about Stregobor have found no closure either. ]

As much as I tried to separate myself from the Brotherhood and had issues with them ... they're the only thing I really had.

[ Which is fairly sad considering how little affection there really was involved, but for the mages, the organization is supposed to be part of their lives eternally. A constant. Istredd had so little for himself. Even his work was tied to them for all those years. ]

Yenna filled me in on some of the details I missed. I was captured by Vilgefortz during the attack. He set a trap for me, with the book. They thought I was dead.

[ A reasonable assumption. And typical him, to be caught so neatly in the web of a man far smarter than any of them realized. Istredd is realistic or even pessimistic about what that means for his future. ]
