He couldn't take the book then but he didn't really feel comfortable with Tissaia and Vilgefortz having it either, and that was before he knew the truth. Istredd didn't want the Brotherhood to have access, he planned on keeping it for his own research for the elves. Unfortunately, nothing went the way they hoped. ]
He thanked me for the book, said it wasn't the only thing he wanted, and that he'd see me soon. And knocked me through a portal, that's the last thing I remember. My guess is he thought I could use the book or help use it.

The unfortunate part is he didn't get to read the book. The knowledge within might have been a useful secret for the Summoned themselves to keep, for protection, maybe that anchor they were hoping for. No point in worrying about it when it's impossible though.
