It's one thing to dust, sweep, mop, do a deep clean, move heavy furniture. But to actually take worn wood and make it look new again, that's another gift altogether. It breathes new life into the place, making it shine.
"Naturally, unfortunately. The way of the universe, in my experience. But we do what we can, when and where we can, to change minds, get people looking at things from a different perspective. Kinder, one hopes. When they learn. If they learn."
He appreciates that learning now, about the other man's world and people. "Blessed seems the most accurate word for it. A gift," he smiles back at Jesper. "What other powers? This isn't all completely new to me anymore, being here a bit now, but it's still new new...ish. Care to share? Show and tell?"

"Nah, I've got no interest in changing minds. Too dangerous back home. People would as soon as sell me to the army or to be burned alive if they caught me. Some things you just accept about life. It's better here." He probably sounds far too nonchalant about how potential death or conscription awaits him, but that's because Jesper is used to it and also he's quite dangerous on his own. He can fight if he has to, and he would. For now he knows he's safe in a merchant's house back home and he's safe in this inn here. Could be a lot worse.
"I probably should tell you, I could make trouble." He laughs. "Super speed, which is very useful, super hearing, which is absolutely terrible, super agility, which is fun, and I can tell when people are lying. No idea how or why it happens, one day you can just do it."

He's heartened, though, by the reminder of Mag and all that she's done for him and others. More people like her existing both here and elsewhere throughout the universe, and they'd all be doing alright. But that's never how it's ever been, and the Doctor has seen the best and the worst in others. Sometimes they change their minds, sometimes they don't for a variety of reasons, but he'll never stop hoping or trying, in any case. He hasn't yet, in all this time. But that's what he does, the life he chose, and that's vastly different from that of the one the younger man before him leads. That it's better here, at least, is encouraging for as long as he's here.
"Now you're talking," the Doctor huffs out a brief laugh now himself, which devolves to a slightly mischievous smirk. "Trouble, chaos, bit of danger — we're old friends. The sort of trouble you're describing, though — can you turn it off or regulate it? The hearing, particularly. Suddenly you're privy to all manner of conversation, the hot goss being shared, to borrow the vernacular of the kids these days."
