[ steve gets it, probably more than even he realizes. he isn't able to bring words to why, but every time he's been in his horizon or someone else's, there is always that feeling of something being wrong. or, maybe it's not wrong, not exactly, but it definitely is off. like he's eating off-brand chips or drinking a no-brand soda; it's still technically what he's looking for, but also isn't anywhere near the real thing. he'd been banking on this present really hitting because he'd been assuming eddie would feel the same about his music, since...i mean, really. listening to it in the horizon is based entirely off of what you remember them being, right? so what if you don't remember something fully? steve had done his best to combat this, going around to other horizons to collect whatever anyone else could remember about the albums and songs, and.
well, he certainly hopes they're all correct. eddie would probably be the only person to know for sure. but steve's still got some time before eddie goes into it that intensely. he's safe, at least for a little bit.
which is why he feels comfortable enough, almost giddy enough, that when eddie turns and fixes him with that unreadable stare that steve does recognize from only a couple of months prior, steve simply smiles back at him - bright and excited and wholly unaffected by just how close they really are. because steve won't pull back just yet, is waiting for the music to really set in.
and then it does, and steve both gets to ear the muffled sound of it from the headphones but also sees the second it happens to eddie, too. how he's pulled out of his thoughts and into the music and aha. that's it. steve, feeling prouder of himself than he has in a long time, decides to lean back so he's not still crowding eddie in that moment. actually laughs a bit to himself, too. ]
Don't worry about it. I'm just glad it all works. I- [ a beat, and then a dawning realization. ] Well, I don't actually know if it has batteries and what you're gonna have to do about that, but uh. Ask Wanda, I guess? If it stops working.
