It's typically a losing game to try to read emotion into the words that appear so flatly on a nearby surface, but in this instance, Wrench has the added benefit of Jayden's facial expression to fill in the blanks. He gives the man a sidelong glance, and finds more reason to consider him now. The words speak to some kind of personal knowledge of how this works, and that makes Wrench consider things a little more closely. Maybe it's not an either-or. Perhaps this man has both personal knowledge of this particular instance, and some experience from back home.
