He should just nod and accept Steve's answer. Move on and do something of actual use down here. Wilhelm doesn't even know much about the man outside of the context of the pit — he doesn't need to dump a torrent of emotions on his head. The thing is, he's already loosened the valve, and it's all coming out anyway.

"How do you stay so calm about it?" It almost sounds like an accusation, but the fury that burned in his voice earlier has collapsed into a vast sadness. He folds his arms around himself and shakes his head. "How do you not just...lose your mind?"

Expelling a sharp sigh, he paces on the spot.

"It's not like I feel guilty that I'm still alive, but...I feel like I should have done something more. I could have. And I know that's crazy, I know it's not my fault. There were way stronger and smarter people than me down here, and they couldn't do anything about it either."
