Look, knowing he had the opportunity to inject a little more humanity into Michael is a victory as far as he's concerned. The more little pieces of himself he can leave behind in that stick-assed archangel, the better for everybody that ever has to interact with him. The better for humanity, potentially. If he'd have known there was a chance he might've done that a decade or so ago, he might've considered saying yes a little more seriously.
