Eponine has no idea what Susan is saying, but whatever it is, it seems to be working. She idles with a football, throwing and kicking it against the wall, deliberately turning her back on her new friend. After a few minutes, she deliberately lets the ball miss, and it rolls away towards where Susan and the guard are. Without hurry or fuss, Eponine follows it.
Unlike Susan, Eponine's mind is completely blank. She knows how to do this, and she moves with a confidence that is usually absent from her walk. On silent feet, having ditched her shoes a long while ago, she creeps up to the guard and Susan.
And there she stops in sheer amazement when she realises Susan's in tears and the man's fussing about pregnancy. She gapes for about five seconds before realising that though Susan's attention grabbing technique is different from what they envisioned together, it's too late to do anything about it now. She shakes her head in utter disgust at Susan, but pushes her opinions on it back for now. She has a job to do.
Carefully, Eponine inches closer until she's close enough to slip a couple of fingers inside the guard's open pocket. She's light fingered anyway, and quick, and she soon has a small bag in her grasp. She starts to edge it out, but the guard reaches forward and she stops until he's back upright. The brown paper bag is half hanging from his pocket, and Eponine nips it and pulls it free as quickly and as gently as she can. She palms the bag, squeezing a corner tightly between her fingers and presses her palm to her hip. To the others, it looks perhaps like she's stood with her hands on her hips. Well, she hopes so, anyway.
"Susan?" she says with mock astonishment. "Why do you cry? Come, shall we stop to bother this man and get to ourselves?" She can't think of any other way to extrapolate Susan from the situation she's got herself into.
