"What were you doing?" Eponine says, half curious and half annoyed, as soon as they're out of earshot of the guard.
"What a stupid thing to say, for now you will never be rid of him fussing you, will you? Honestly, to say you will have a child?" Eponine spits on the floor. "Stupid. Now he will come and check again and again..." She trails off, before glancing back at Susan. With malice in her voice, she adds, "Or maybe that's what you want, truly?"

She shakes her head. "There are better ways, Miss Susan, than to say that. You offer it first. Show your ankle, the girls would say, and then you say the baby even when there isn't. Don't you know anything?"

Eponine's grinning now. Honestly, she thinks that Susan is just really innocent and naive. She checks round for the guards, and then opens her fist. She's clutching a brown paper bag filled with strawberry bon bon sweets. Not that Eponine recognises them. She wrinkles her nose.
"I were hoping for coin. What are they?"
