assembles: (even though it's dorky as hell)

Getting around armies. Is that the kind of work that Jesper had done back home? Steve knows that he's got experience stealing things and that war was also common in his world, but the specifics of what he and the other Crows like Inej and Kaz did hadn't been explained to him in full, save what his patchy future memories tell him.

Now he gets to see it in action.

When Jesper places his hands on the floor, Steve knows what he's doing. The echolocation power was explained to him before they even left the city, and while he can't sense or see or hear what Jesper is doing, he assumes that he's gathering information. In the meantime, Steve keeps all his senses perked for the possibility of someone coming across them here.

Thankfully, it doesn't take too long, and Steve moves close behind Jesper as he leads them in what he thinks is the correct direction. Heavy equipment is most definitely what they're looking for, so hopefully they're going the right way.

But then Jesper pauses to clarify something, causing Steve to briefly raise an eyebrow. It doesn't seem like Jesper is asking because he would be bothered if some of these soldiers died, but rather that he's checking Steve's own comfort level.

"I'd like to avoid them if we can," he confirms with a tight-jawed nod. "Mainly because if or when we're apprehended, we're less likely to be locked up for good if no one here lost their life." Sure, the government wasn't going to be happy about this setback, but if actual blood was spilled? That escalated things. And, well, Steve can kill, but he does avoid it when it's possible. Sometimes it isn't, but maybe in this case they can spare lives.
