[ The air certainly feels tenser now. He knows Sam likes to show off his cooking, mess around with food. It's probably a hell of a lot more effective in real life, too. Except Amos doesn't think he'd care right now even if it was real. The effect's been shattered.
We're not putting him down is just naive. And Amos knows that's where people like him come in. He knows Hunter has killed; doesn't think Wings has. So. Okay. He can make that call for him, spare him from it.
... The political bullshit. Solvunn potentially using him for their own gain; being turned into a villain. And all of that is not conducive towards keeping kids safe, and that's the only priority he has now.
Amos holds Sam's gaze a moment longer, and then his shoulders slump, the fight gone out of him.
Funnily enough, every interaction he's had with Estinien has been... pleasant. They'd talked. Amos doesn't get why he fought for Solvunn at the Dimming, but they'd reached an understanding, last time he saw him. If Estinien comes up with a good plan of action, he'll let Amos know, give him some direction. And then Amos can not fuck up.
Amos is going to fuck up, unless.
So he exhales at Sam's question. ]
Probably me.
[ He isn't easily provoked — but damn, if Holden wasn't the only thing holding him back from smoking Murtry then and there back on Ilus. Probably would have saved them all a lot of trouble if he'd done it, too. But Cap had said not to, and Wings is saying they don't kill people, and Hunter is saying it's a bad idea, and if he's axing Goro in the street then he's the villain and then there's war and then the kids gotta live through that, and this all spiralled out of control before he was even aware of it.
He shuts his eyes for a prolonged moment. Opens them when he speaks again, gaze serious. ]
You guys say not to kill him, I won't. Won't tell anyone else not to, though. That's their problem if they do. [ A pause; a frown. ] I'll figure out a way to keep the kids safe. Rest of it's up to everybody else.
[ It's really not his place. Hell, not even this is, really — but it's important, so he'll do it. ]
