There is a lot he does not yet understand, and a lot that Emet-Selch has apparently neglected to share with him. Not that Thancred should be surprised, as he's the sort of person who would rather always paint himself in the best light, despite all of his faults.
It's likely that Hythlodaeus is not going to like the answer to his question, and yet if he's that curious to know, Thancred won't withhold the information from him. Especially now that he is also receiving the answers he so desires. He listens carefully and while some of the details do not yet make sense to Thancred (they were brought back, from where? what had happened to him and the others?), it does sound as if his last memories were not his final moments.

Their goal was to bring back the world they knew, before everything had been rent into shards. However, doing so meant bringing about calamities within the shards as they are now, destroying everything we know.
