Even if it's self-centered, their self-preservation is probably what makes them most distinct about them. Determination, Thancred, and the will to prolong their lives are how they create impact.
[And when humans interact with monsters perhaps it is their imagination whether it's fear or admiration, that helps anchor an existence like hers, long after death, enough that she can be a summon to fight for humanity.]
