[ For all that Thancred might rely on teasing remarks to set others around him at ease, he also knows that there is a time and a place. He knows not to make such comments when they won't be well-received, and he's also well aware of how it feels to travel like this while sporting an injury. It's not a pleasant time, and he can only imagine that the near-constant pain has left Stephen tired and irritable.

It's why he offers to do the work this time around, to grant Stephen at least a short period to rest. Not that this should be particularly difficult or take much time, but even a brief reprieve could make a difference.

Thancred has spent enough time with them that he understands the sore spots, and that in itself is worth focusing on, isn't it? Trust and camaraderie have grown between them, even if it doesn't feel that way in the immediate moment.

Of course, a true friend is someone who has seen you at less than your best. He knows that better than most.

He sends Stephen a small smile as he takes the device. ]
We can only hope. [ He then turns and moves to the shoreline of the gulf, where the water laps up slowly. He pauses a few fulms before where the tide might roll in and then crouches down to set up the device. Having seen this done enough times by now, he deftly positions the thaumametor and preps it to calibrate. ]

Be kind to us, won't you? It's been a long day. [ Thancred addresses the inanimate object before wondering what he's even doing. Perhaps this has all worn him down more than he thought. ]
