[ While Thancred could continue to argue the case of a spell that could make alcohol that much stronger, he also senses that something is amiss at about the same time that Yennefer does. Despite the fact that he has become comfortable traveling alongside these two over the past weeks, he has never entirely let his guard down. It has nothing to do with them and everything to do with the fact that they are venturing into the unknown wilderness. There are creatures out there — they've simply been lucky enough to avoid them thus far.

He can tell that the horses are also uneasy all of a sudden, their hooves pawing uncertainly at the dirt beneath them. Animals are often the first sign that there's something off, and he should have picked up on their nervousness sooner.

As he and Yennefer both catch quick movements between the trees, there's another flash of something up ahead as one of the monsters springs out from hiding to knock Stephen to the ground. Once Thancred gets a proper look at the wolf-like creatures, he realizes why they'd remained camouflaged for so long. With leaves and vines in place of fur, it would have been near to impossible to catch sight of them as they'd closed in.

There's too many of them, Yennefer says as quietly as she can at his side. He shakes his head; they'll get through this. It's nothing he hasn't done before, and if anything, he's surprised that it took them this long to aggravate the wildlife. ]

I suppose we should have expected this. Nothing we can't handle, I assure you. [ And with that he bursts forward, right toward the wolf closest to himself and Yennefer. He wants to free Stephen from danger as soon as he can, but he'll need to cut a path to him first, lest he be completely surrounded. One of the wolves immediately reacts to his sudden movement and leaps toward him. Thancred draws his gunblade from his back and cleaves it out in front of him in one smooth motion, the blade slicing through first leaves and then muscle and tendon.

They'll focus them down, one at a time, and aim not to be overwhelmed. It's the only way. ]
