[ Had Thancred thought it worth assuring Stephen that he could handle the wolves himself, he would have said as much. Later on he'll regret not voicing that.

While the way that the shield crashes into the two wolves is enough to knock one down completely and shove the other to the side, effectively clearing a path, it doesn't turn out to be worth the risk. Not when the wolf that's been bearing down on Stephen this whole time takes the opening that it's granted and pounces, those pointed fangs finding soft skin and latching on relentlessly.

Yennefer yells out, racing past to make it to Stephen's side and render aid. That leaves Thancred to handle the one that hasn't been entirely incapacitated by the impact of Stephen's shield. He jumps into action, cleaving his blade down across the wolf's shoulder in a searing slice before he squeezes the trigger of the gunblade to discharge a cartridge from the barrel of his weapon. It makes a lot of noise, but it also kills one more wolf and at this point he's hoping that it will scare off the few who might still be lingering in the woods and waiting for their moment to attack.

Meanwhile, Yennefer's attempts to aid Stephen are only half-working. She's wounded the wolf, but it's tenacious, its jaw locked as its teeth continue to rip through Stephen's skin. At this point it might be so latched on that it can't properly let go. Thancred races over, returning his gunblade to his back as he closes the distance and then skids down next to Stephen, both hands reaching out to quite literally grab the wolf by the muzzle and pry its mouth open. With that, he kicks one leg out and slams his boot into the wolf's belly, finally forcing it back and away.

In an instant, his hand moves to his belt and he pulls free a throwing knife, which he aims right at the wolf's head. The blade plunges into its skull and the beast immediately falls over dead.

Stephen, meanwhile, is soaked in blood to the point that it's difficult to even tell how injured he is, and two more wolves have closed in. Thancred stares up at Yennefer, eyes wide with the chaos of the fight and the knowledge that one of them has sustained a severe injury. ]

Some magick might be helpful about now!

[ He knows she likely can't. It's the only explanation for why she hasn't, yet. But if Thancred's suspicions are somehow off the mark and she can turn the tide for them, he has to say something. ]
