Who: Emet-Selch and OTA!
When: backdated to the Bad Moon Rising plot
Where: Solvunn
What: Unpredictable power surges play badly with Emet-Selch's ability to transform
Warnings: transformations may include extra eyes and limbs
[For all that he takes pains to hide it the darkening sky has Emet-Selch a little ill at ease. True, he is no stranger to eclipses. But something about this one feels different, for reasons he can't quite put a finger on. And when magic itself begins to go awry it is not any more comforting, even when no monsters appear.
The first surge of magic catches him off-guard when it comes, and it's only a moment later that he realizes that it's his ability to transform that's been affected... and less time to realize that he cannot simply transform back. Needless to say, this is not any less concerning, and he promptly turns and head back to his own home, fully intending to wait the effect out.
But as one day becomes two and then three, the eclipse fading even as whatever is effecting his ability to retain control over his transformations does not he returns to his usual habits without so much as the slightest suggestion that he might have been concerned. He may look more unusual from time to time, yes, but he will not leave his work undone indefinitely and he has come to enjoy the time he spends in the library besides.]

[When he's lucky, the effects are mild. His fingernails elongate to claws (which oddly seem to be painted to a hue resembling brass), perhaps, or his skin takes on a decidedly grey pallor - which does his complexion no favors. Or maybe it's simply that his eyes seem to be almost glowing. But no matter the effect, he might almost seem normal, and does his best to go about his day as he would have otherwise.]

[Other times, the changes are more pronounced. A spiked crown hovering over his head, or two pair of eyes glowing uniformly white where he might otherwise have just the one pair of normal eyes, or his hair gone silver-white instead of its usual brown-and-white. These he at least tries to explain away as being relatively harmless - and appearances aside none of them seem to be bothering him any - but it is not always easy to do so, not least of all when a fair few of them leave him looking distinctly unusual even for one of the summoned.]
{III}
[...And then there are the times where he is profoundly unlucky. Where he cannot hide, even for a moment, that this is anything but normal. Days where he finds himself with a second, almost monstrous pair of arms sprouting from his back, and even scaled as they are to his current size, they are nonetheless unwieldy, in a body that was never meant to have to counterbalance the weight. Or where his face is simply... gone, replaced with a mask through which only two pairs of glowing eyes can be a seen, while a hood that seems to be woven of shadows themselves drapes over his head and shoulders, and a spiked crown sits atop his head.
On these occasions, he tries to stick to the lesser traveled portions of the primary settlement. But that is still no guarantee that he will actually be able to, when even he can't predict when one of the strange surges of magic will hit.]
