No, they're pretty solid on real science around here. The Free Cities especially, the technology might not seem generally impressive to you and I, but it's still pretty comparable to the early 1900s in a lot of ways, and more advanced than that in others. Besides, this world has different laws of physics and nature. There's resources and branches of science and study here that never existed back on Earth.
