Jesper is equally shameless; who would mind being seen with Mat? He's handsome, funny, brilliant. The only shame is they've never been able to do it in real life, but there are upsides to that too.

"Sam's that guy who always looks out for other people, he made a deal with the innkeeper in Cadens, so all of us have a place to live when we get there. He's a good man, means what he says." So it's about personal loyalty more than any real adherence to an ideal. Jesper is an intensely loyal person, once someone's earned it they have it forever, and Sam's earned it by being good to him and to Inej. Everyone likes him, and they have their own little family in the inn.

Jesper's tone is very genuine, usually only heard when referencing Inej, because he cares about Sam. He cares about his good opinion, which is why he's volunteered for just about anything, and also why he's kept some of his shadier traits quiet. It might not be the most honest approach, but he reminds Jesper too much of his dad, and Saints know that Jesper is still squirrely around his father.

"Everything, it's got a lot of flavor. Apparently that's normal where he's from. Nothing dull about it." So of course Jesper's a huge fan. He hands over a plate. "I didn't expect to see you here."
