In a way I think they are trying to be the opposite of Thorne. No dependence on magic, a lot of freedom, heavy leaning toward technology and self-reliance, elected officials. Which also might be why they're against the Singularity, because Thorne wants to be closer to it.

It is why Jayce brought up in the talk earlier that it's likely best for them to have proof on every level of whatever is going on with the Singularity, since none of the factions will simply believe in each other. He hasn't been here longer than Kell, but Jayce has a tendency to get involved quickly, and he's been in the library and in the museums a lot since arriving. He may be avoiding politics, but here he is, fairly well-informed regardless. ]
There was a peace summit that didn't go well not that long ago, that's why there's increasing concern the war is coming sooner rather than later.
