It occurs to Viktor that without a visual, he could be hearing things. This place could be playing tricks on him, an effort to drag him deeper into the illusion--but for what purpose? There's a great deal about this that makes little sense. Perhaps the simplest solution is also the correct one, and Jayce really is here, on the other side of the wall.
