[ open ] This is Halloween, everybody make a scene

Julie has always thrown a good party. It was true in Kansas, it was true in Vegas, and it's true in the Horizon. And last year's party had been a smashing success by Julie's standards.

At that time.

See, the thing is, back then, Julie didn't understand exactly what she was capable of doing with the Horizon's powers. She had, without meaning to, limited herself to things that already made sense in the world she had previously known. But that's not the world she lives in anymore, and after a year of learning, she's ready to actually throw a Horizon-worthy party.

I | WAIT
For the vast majority of the Summoned, this will be the first time they've ever seen the pink neon that illuminates the edges of Julie's club go dark. The pink carpet and pink velvet ropes are gone; the big double doors are closed and locked. Those with keen eyes might notice that the door handles, normally in the shape of rising clouds of butterflies, are now swarms of bats. There is a small sign on a stand at the door.

All around the building, there's the loud, ominous sound of a grandfather clock's swinging pendulum, ticking toward an unknown time (well, it is known, as Julie sent out invitations). The wood of the doors bears long, ragged scratches, as if claws have been dragged down them. Thick fog gradually surrounds the building -- while not thick enough to obscure vision, it is nonetheless ominous and haunting.

The clock chimes nine o'clock; the sound is deafening. There is a long, pregnant pause, and just when it seems like nothing is going to happen, there is a sudden screech from above. An enormous, bulbous spider crawls atop the roof as if from the back, its body and legs so large and long that they span the building's width. It gives another great shriek as it leers down from the roof, fangs dripping, but it doesn't reach down from its perch. It remains above the crowd, menacingly.

At the same time, the doors burst open in an almost explosive manner, and the pounding music begins to pour out from within. More fog floats out of the foyer, carrying obscured green and orange light. The party has started.

II | CREEP
Walking through the front door, there are many details to be noticed, enough that it's easy to overlook most of them. The mist is a heavy blanket across the ground, thinning out for visibility only around waist-height. Where last year the theme was set in a barren forest, this year appears to be set in a massive, abandoned Victorian mansion. While the club maintains its normal shape from the outside, the inside is transformed to mimic long, winding hallways and spiraling staircases that seem to lead nowhere. The roof is high, in cathedral arches, and the fireplaces are dark. The walls and mantles bear various pieces of decoration: eerie black-and-white portraits in filthy frames, cracked vases full of dead flowers, jagged and broken sconces. Everything is covered in a vast, dusty coat of cobwebs, and the entire main hall must be traversed to reach the music that streams through the air.

Ignore the movements in the corner of your eyes. And be careful not to graze the walls -- lest you discover that the black pattern on the dark wallpaper is less of a pattern and more of an infestation.

Along the way, one might be inclined to open one of the many doors that line the halls and see what's inside. There are any number of strange scenes to find -- those familiar enough may recognize the haunting figures as Julie's clubgoers in costume. Interacting may have... unintended consequences.

Make it through the maze of haunted rooms and revolving doors, and you'll be rewarded by finding the ballroom.

III | PARTY
True to Julie form, the ballroom is fully decked out for only the wildest of parties. Spiderwebs stretch across the vaulted ceilings and between pillars, with lights hanging from their gossamer threads. Candles help illuminate by floating near the ceiling and around tables.

The bar, swapped for heavy Gothic design, is manned by Steven, as always. Despite being dressed as a white-eyed demon, he is as helpful as ever, and happy to make you whatever drink your heart desires. Two long tables flank the bar -- one boasts a huge variety of spooky snacks and bowls of candies, amongst other, more classic party dishes. The other holds vast quantities of... other goodies, should one be tempted to participate: bowls of pre-rolled joints and various pills, silver platters with small mountains of cocaine atop them, and even tiny canisters of whippits, for those with low tolerance. Be careful not to confuse the regular candies with their cannabis-infused counterparts.

The dance floor is large and lit in purple, orange and green. The music is loud enough to dance to, but not so loud that conversation is impossible. The resident partiers that weren't used to play roles in the scary scenes congregate here, in a wide assortment of random sexy costumes.

Hopefully, you've arrived in time to see Julie's grand entrance.

Jo's there on time, wherein early is on time, and has the time to look around and read the sign. The clear message here is that everything that's about to happen, whatever that is, is some elaborately staged show. Jo doesn't know if that's comforting or just so very depressingly everything she expects from the worship of Halloween back home. She's trying to be hopeful. For Nadine and Altair, if no one else.

It's Jo's first time there, and she doesn't have any preconceived notions of it not looking like this every day. While it's nothing like as pee your pants terrifying of half the places she popped into during the Horizon's hiccups, it's definitely got 'authentic Halloween party here' vibes going on. Clawed doors with little kitschy bat handles. The clock countdown from well-hidden speakers while the fog pours in.

The spider, though?
Fucking massive and creepy.

Jo has her hand out, palm curved, and her sword almost manifested before she remembers the sign. It's a slow curl of those fingers back, eyes still not leaving the monster shrieking from the roof. A good number of people in the crowd shoulder their way past her as she stares at the thing and has to talk her body into relaxing, into just walking in through those open doors, beneath it. The hallway and the many open doors, several of which Jo can't just walk by, re-evaluate some of her earlier assumptions.

It is like those other places, but as tiny slotted party rooms,
designed to be like those other things, but at someone's wish.
The play version of actual horrors. Jo needs a drink already.

Jo's a little relieved to reach the ballroom itself and find herself staring for too long into hallway rooms. The ballroom is another elaborate decor, and all spider webs, dripping lights, and floating lights. The bar does get an impressed raise of eyebrows. While Jo doesn't consider herself a connoisseur of bars, not even for working in too many of them, it's a nice big piece of work and a girl's best friend. She hits up the bar first.

A shot or two down, whatever she gets or is given, Jo decides to check out the tables. The first of which has a bite-sized rainbow Twizzlers pack taken off of it, and the other — "Seriously?"

Jo will circulate through the night, looking for familiar faces to say hello to, eating some food, very often carrying a drink, and doing her best to keep her chin up. She might take a little convincing to dance if you're the first person to ask, but once she's warmed up, she won't mind trading a partner or two while she's already out there, before coming back off the floor for stints.

His attendance here required some persuading. His agreement to wear a costume, less so — Altaïr has learned some of the customs of this holiday, and versed in social stealth as he is, he understands that not wearing one would stand out more.

Still, he has to wonder if Jo has any idea how appropriate the outfit she suggested is for him.

He fits in, but that doesn't make him excellent at socializing. He keeps to himself for a while, exploring the decorations and such before eventually bumping into Jo at one of the snack tables.

"Good evening." He nods, his face uncovered. The hood was a comfortable choice, but not the mask. "Enjoying yourself?"

A long shadow falls over Jo as Jack nearly walks into her. He's been so busy trying to look at every single detail and keep his excitement contained that he hardly noticed her.

"Sorry! Sorry, I didn't see you there." Jack bowed his head apologetically and lifted his hands in a gesture to signify he meant no harm. He knew startling people in this world could be a mixed bag and he'd rather keep his head on his shoulders. There was fun to be had!

Jo starts to sputter indignantly at whoever it is, turning to look up and up and up at the weirdest (and o-n-l-y) moving skeleton she's ever seen. All of her skin going tight far too fast, even as the back of her brain raced to catch up with decade-old impulses. Costume! Costume, like Julie's! Her first impulse is so loud and overwhelming, even as she stares at him and thinks about that goddamn sign. All of this is planned. Do not attack anyone.

Her teeth-gritting, and maybe that trying to get the race of her heart back under control turns it a little cruel because what's with this guy's opinion of what a bleached skill looks like? And, seriously. Is this what the rest of this night is going to look like? People who decided to take the Horizon for a whirl as the Halloween sin?

"Maybe pay a little more attention, then, so you don't run into people?"
doubledead: (i have made several mistakes)

[personal profile] doubledead 2022-10-31 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm--very sorry, miss," Jack tried again. He ducked down a little so that he wasn't so imposing. This woman was not pleased to see him. He couldn't blame her after, well, everything. Even he would be giving other skeletons a bit of a skeptical eye should he meet any more.

It was hard to shake off that feeling of betrayal.

"I'm just excited to be at a Halloween party--after everything, I wasn't sure there would be any."

"Hey, yourself."

Jo gives the Death knock-off costume a once over, fighting the irony (but not her smile at that irony) about the fact Altiar's being even more fully head-to-toe covered than normal almost; just shapelessly under the black billow of cloth. Her being down to more skin than the slip of this skin-tight green dress and its thinnest, green-veined, matching wings. There's a vague wonder if he's still strapped under there, too. She wouldn't be surprised.

"I suppose it's not too bad?" Jo shrugged her bare shoulders, and the wings behind her fluttered far too naturally with the shift of those shoulder muscles. Even for her, that's a little weird. But she decided to try something new outside of just putting on a Halloween costume for the first time since she wasn't in elementary school. "What about you? How's this whole first Halloween party thing look to you?"

What did it look like to anyone who didn't know what it was
and didn't have her chip in that view?
tobeclosetohim: (And you pray with your knees)

[personal profile] tobeclosetohim 2022-10-31 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Okay. That might be the least scary and party-bro response on the planet, and it even makes Jo's brow knit together with some surprise, deflating the first spike of her temper. She knows she's too touchy. It's this whole. Halloween. Thing. It's not like it was going to be easy. Massive aggressive spider on the roof. Descending Spider Queen. Rooms with ghosts and what like. And this.

But each punctures on the first pressure from her, and it's wrong the guy can make that face look like she kicked a puppy and not a walking pile of suited bones. Chagrinned a touch, Jo reigned it back and attempted civility, at least because apologies were about as rare as falling stars, and she already had to hand out one more than usual in the last month's batch of fuckery.

"You one of those Halloween fanatics?"
doubledead: (humor is dead)

[personal profile] doubledead 2022-10-31 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Jack watched her carefully and when her body language reminded him less of a cat with an arched back, he lowered his shoulders and stood tall again. His smile returned.

"You could say that." Jack cackled quietly to himself as though he were enjoying a private joke. He brought a bony hand to his chest. "My name is Jack. What's yours?"
tobeclosetohim: (What will you leave behind?)

[personal profile] tobeclosetohim 2022-10-31 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
The cackling and commentary to himself are more par for the course of what Jo expected of the people behind the costumes. The kind of people who live for this shit, counting the days down as soon as October started, and had tiny drunken rants of their whatever-tini's about how Christmas decorations went up at the same time, and that was the absolute end of their world.

"Jo." She considers saying her last name or even where she's from outside the Horizon, but none of it comes out. "You know Julie, or just come by way of one of those million magical invitations that got everywhere in the Domains?"

Even as he stood there before her, he fidgeted. He turned to look at sounds with wide, excited eye sockets and his grin reached so far past his eyes that it threatened to split his head in two. Suddenly he snapped his attention back to her.

"Oh! Jo, it's great to meet you! I almost forgot to say."

[ Jo does make it for the entrance, being early and all, and it is ... dramatic. Fall down from a ceiling of skittering spiders, the queen among them. Macabre finery, too many wicked long jointed legs on that swing, with kicky feet and cotton candy-bubble gum pink hair. The first of what will undoubtedly be a long series of not-quite-what-she was expecting in the action of.

Especially when Julie breaks into smiles and starts hugging and cheek-kissing the people closest to her, her voice ringing out through the crowds that cluster around her. A dichotomy that dispels a lot of the image and even more of that tension Jo hadn't realized she was holding while watching it. This whole night will be a lot of taking a breath and letting it out, won't it.

Jo waits with some of the people,

The more Jack talks, the less creepy it registers on. Yeah, the costume is ... a thing. Weird. Over exaggerated. Though in comparison to Julie's, it's almost tame. Maybe if he looked less like some kid-safe version of a skeleton that went toward kookily kid-friendly (save those weird flashes of nearly opening his mouth wide enough to crack that full skull head in two).

But the guy inside? He's like a puppy dog—a distracted and awed five-year-old.
All interest and enthusiasm about the whole shebang of the show Julie put on.

"It's different. Big forest, long winding highway, a bar tucked into the middle."

[ steve, genuinely, has no idea what he's getting into when he gets an invitation from a woman he doesn't know and thinks what the hell. being too old for the general party scene of hawkins indiana (aka, high school parties that he used to throw), it's been a hot second since steve's even been to a party, let alone halloween (which, give a guy a break, the last halloween party he remembers going to ended kind of horrendously, something that is still a sore spot if he lets himself think about it for too long.

for now, though, steve thinks he's due a weird, magic-infused halloween party. especially in the horizon where he's pretty sure (untested) he can't be hungover the next day? he's still exhausted from the emotional and mental toll whatever those weird dreams brought him, and he's only just now feeling better.

for now - you can catch steve dressed up as indiana jones, taking his sweet time inspecting, and getting really creeped out by, just about everything he sees. in particular, he's going to get a little too close to the wall and will jump when he notices it moving, or if he's opened a door and definitely decided absolutely not, possibly even backing up into you as he does so. ]

He has no fewer than five knives strapped to his body at various points beneath the robes. The smaller number is in concession to the festive occasion; the fact that he is not unarmed is because such a thing rarely happens.

(Her costume strikes him as unwise in that sense and nearly indecent by the standards of his homeland, but Altaïr is not especially concerned with others' sense of decency. It's the lack of places to hide a weapon that would concern him more if he thought they were in real danger.)

"It has been a learning experience. The decorations are impressive." Admittedly, they are also easier to achieve in the Horizon, but even with the enhanced creative capabilities available to them here, he doubts he would have come up with as impressive a display if it were up to him.

"The costumes, though." He frowns, working it out in his head. He is not a stupid man, but he must be missing some part of the logic. "I understood they should conceal one's identity. But you are obviously yourself."

[ Eddie has made it incredibly clear that parties are not his scene. It’s not that he doesn’t enjoy a little fun. Quite the contrary, just just that that parties in Hawkins were usually swarming with the type of people who Eddie didn’t want to be around and who didn’t want to be around Eddie. It grew into a sort of unspoken agreement: Hawkins’ best and brightest got their parties, Eddie got Hellfire.

But he’s met Julie once, and he hasn’t met a person here he dislikes yet, and he needs to do something to occupy his mind after the shitshow that was the last week. And of course, this is definitely not a Hawkins party. This is something Eddie can enjoy, so long as he doesn’t think too hard about it. He’s a self-admitted coward, but Halloween always offered a good sort of scare; the kind that isn't going to actually hurt you.

And to top it all off, he’s dressed as an incredibly spooky and terrifying accurate...bedsheet ghost. But a cool one. With sunglasses and tennis shoes.
]

Hey, man.

[ He pulls the sheet off of his head and around his shoulders, and snickers at Steve’s costume, like he has any room to judge. ]

Wait & Creep

At this point in time Jesper's not really spooked by strange things in the Horizon; he's had several experiences now and he can tell when something is playfully meant. This is Julie after all, and he knows she's been preparing for this particular party for awhile. He is determined therefore to have a good time. If anyone else is spooked they should feel free to cozy on up to Jesper who is taking all of it in stride, smiling as the ambiance gets creepier by the minute. This is all headed somewhere fun, and he's in.

Maybe people also recognize that he is in a ridiculous costume mimicking one of the other Summoned. He is dressed as Geralt but as completely silly as it might seem, with his silver hair incredibly fake, a giant wolf necklace that is gaudy, and the gold contacts very obvious. He holds a stuffed animal of a wolf under his arm and is dressed otherwise in black, and he will do impersonations of Geralt's gruff voice as long as he's dressed this way.

PARTY

Jesper immediately dances his way into the ballroom once he's allowed, very atypical of probably Geralt of Rivia himself although he's dressed up as a farcical version of him. He tries very hard to be as serious as possible when people come up to him, but his grin never stays away for long. He can be found at the bar and on the dance floor in this first costume.

When things start to get hot, Jesper suddenly changes costume to actually mimic the lady of the hour herself, Julie Lawry. His silver Geralt wig turns instead into a bubblegum pink curly wave and he is dressed up in a gown that he's seen her somewhat represent before in the past, also in pink. This includes the cut up his thigh for maximum hilarity and he is wearing platform shoes. This brings him up to 6'7 so beware the towering man in pink clothes and with makeup also inspired by his beloved Julie. He seems remarkably comfortable in heels, all things considered! Come have a cocktail with him.

Jesper does spend most of the night repping one of these two because he clearly thinks it's hilarious, but toward the end he is dressed as a sexy cowboy, whatever that means, and he looks as confident and comfortable in that as he does in anything else. Shame is not in his vocabularly. He will seem in general high spirits, chattering with anyone who wants, willing them to laugh along with his clothes since that's what this night is about.

Fun!

Eddie Munson | The Devil

[personal profile] satanicpanics 2022-11-03 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I - Wait / Creep

[ Eddie has never been one for parties, which definitely speaks in startling contrast to the vibe he tends to give off. Parties back home were typically held at the houses of bored rich kids who Eddie never got along particularly well with. He wasn’t exactly welcome, and he had technically aged out of that scene years ago.

But he’s liked everyone he’s met in Abraxas so far, and it’s hard to say no to a distraction after such a rough month. His choice to come back to the Horizon was a difficult one, but creepy things are far more enjoyable when you know there’s no real threat of being harmed. The sign helped to reassure him: everything is planned, do not panic, and his nervous energy has been tuned down several notches tonight. Besides, his birthday was the day prior, though he’s yet to tell anyone, and it only seems right to come and see what it’s like to be of legal drinking age. Not that it matters here—not that it really even mattered back home either, but it’s the principle of the thing.

If you were expecting him to go for the obvious costume and dress as one of his favorite musicians, you are wrong and you should feel bad about finding him so predictable. He’s dressed as a sheet ghost, thank you very much, but not just any sheet ghost. He’s dress as a cool sheet ghost. It’s a great costume, a total classic, and no one should criticize him for it.

You can find him—excuse me, you can find a terrifying specter, wandering various rooms, and making gremlin noises right back at the enormous spider. He is an adult.
]

II - Party

[ When Eddie makes it to the ballroom, the first thing he does is make a beeline for the bar. He didn’t dance in Ikorr, he’s not going to dance here. You might catch him trying to stump the barman, trying to find something he can’t mix, but it’s clear that it isn’t possible and in the end he gives up and orders a beer. ]

Hm.

[ He pauses, staring at the bottle for a moment. Clearly, he did not think this costume throug. Grumbling, he relents, removes his sunglasses and pulls the sheet over his head to take a drink. ]

Hey.

[ He turns to the person beside him, his eyes wide and his tone deathly serious: ]

Did you just see that ghost?

[Later on, having all but abandoned his wonderful costume (but still sporting the sunglasses), he’ll shuffle over to the tables and peruse a bit. When he sees the joints, that’s the end of it. He will not be moving from this spot. ]

Holy shit, yes.

[ He clasps his hands together and raises his eyes to the ceiling in mock prayer, looking as if he might literally cry tears of joy. Rarely did a day go by back home where Eddie didn’t light up at least once, so this is a blessing. Thank you, Julie. ]

Jesper would be lying if he said Julie's response isn't 100% his greatest need at this party. It's her party, for one, and for two, he knows she's been through some shit lately, and he wants to make her laugh. There is nothing like her smile and glee, and he happily posed with her, both with grins and with serious Geralt face. Grim but overly so, because it's hilarious. He said everything she wanted in a fairly good mimic.

It's his version of her that he knew would send her which is why he kept it hidden until the right moment. Jesper's already laughing by the time she makes it to him and he puts an arm around her waist. She's very tiny next to him at the moment and the contrast to his bubblegum pink clothes and her vivid black is so intentional.

"That is utterly impossible, but I strove to be as close as I could." He grins at her, ear to ear, at least now he has no Geralt grimness to pretend at. The two of them are who they are, Wheels, and he playfully struts his leg out, bare up to the seam, just as she would. His thighs are thicker but not that much, he is such a skinny stick after all.

"You said to go all out!"
