If Claude's fine then this talk is more about a problem for Jesper, and he is feeling this strange sense of dread at the back of his mind. Claude does know a little of his background, enough of it, and he manages to keep his expression clear though, since they're in public. Gray eyes are a lot more wary, but not seeable from a distance.
He listens and Claude at least gets directly to it, which makes him feel like someone has tossed him straight into an ice bath. Or dumped a huge bucket of it on top of his head. He pales and it's a very good thing that they stop for the wagon because he feels sick. There is no real reason to fear the Free Cities military the way he fears what's possible back home, but that logic does not apply to PTSD. The fear that's dogged him his entire life.
Obviously this was always a risk. He got sloppy on the supply run. He wanted to solve the problem and be a hero, but it put him in a weak position. He knows this city well so he turns on his heel and walks down a sidewalk. He turns very suddenly in two roads from there, dizzyng in its quick changes in direction, although slow enough for Claude to follow him. If anyone was trying to follow them, they'd probably lose them in the second turn.
He leans his back against the wall of a now quiet back road, narrow and winding. Jesper sighs and rubs hands over his face. "I've gotten too confident. I should have known better." If he hadn't done it, they would've failed their mission.
