Perhaps he simply expects the worst assumed of his intentions—and maybe a flicker of surprise is visible when he realizes the thought had not actually crossed her mind.

Bit hard to investigate a curse from a world not of his own, received from a sphere that they haven't got access to. Only two of them might know anything from that realm: Jo and Dean.
