Mat's a clever and imaginative fellow, he's sure he'll come upon something that Lucifer could offer and that would be worth the risk he'd take. He really would rather not test whether or not Jesper means it when he says he'd scale the walls of Thorne by hand to rescue him.

He understands why he's being asked to do this, he does. And he can respect it. But he is no hero.
