"However, as you already pointed out, I believe that Lyle Vela also knows all too well what might happen to him if he gets on the bad side of either of them. The fact that he offers sanctuary to the Summoned in spite of that counts for something, does it not?"

It's not that Thancred particularly trusts the man. As this Lucifer says, everyone has an agenda, and even if Lyle's is simply the safety of his people, it's something they have to keep in mind. If it's between the people of Nott or the Summoned, there's no question who Vela would choose.
