[ OPEN ] an informal event.

Who: the summoned of cadens
When: beginning of february
Where: the sarstina inn and tavern
What: sam is hitting two birds with one stone - his February (or whatever February means in abraxas time) family dinner AND a kind of new-summoned-social event. he even had hilda help spread the word!
Warnings: will update if needed!

THE DINNER
As per Hilda's invitation, if any of the Summoned come by Sarstina's that evening, they will find it set up a little differently than it's normal tavern sprawl. There is a large long table set up near the bar that has plenty of food spread out across it - which appears to look very southern-inspired in its intention, limited only by the kinds of ingredients a certain Sam Wilson can get his hands on. Behind the bar is Mag, who will serve whoever it is that comes up to ask for a drink - it appears someone is covering the tab tonight.

There are various tables and chairs set up around the place, as well as a stage on the corner for some live music from one of their very own later in the evening. The vibes is definitely low-key and casual - come get an ale, come eat some food, and if you're a new face there is a very good chance you'll end up (gently and in the most friendly way) cornered by either Sam, Hilda, or one of the other Summoned here to help answer questions and give a bit more background on what the hell is going on and also let you know about Mag's whole deal. Aka, if you're looking for a room until you're a little more on your feet, you are welcome here. Room and board in exchange for work. Not a big gig, right?

And if being social isn't your vibe, Sam's kind of betting on the fact there aren't many here who would turn down free food and drinks. And believe him - the food is pretty damn good.
OOC INFO
- this is a totally open post! I've got a TL below for various scenarios you can find Sam, but otherwise have fun, meet some people, put up a TL of your own! there are various places to run into people in the tavern, and if you find someone who is willing to help you into the Horizon, Sam's been letting people know they can use his room upstairs.

- Sam's only Rule is there will be no fighting. You want to duke it out? Take it somewhere else. There will not be warnings or second chances. Don't be an ass. He has lived in this Inn since he first got here and considers this his home, and if ANYONE is seen giving Mag a hard time, he will not hesitate. He's not afraid of squaring up, but you will not be invited back if you cause too many issues. :)

- this is open to any and all Summoned in Cadens, no matter loyalties or factions. Sam is going to be going overboard to be welcoming, especially to new faces. Even if your character didn't see the big invitation, feel free to have them invited by word of mouth.

- Mag is an NPC who you can read a little more about in the NPC section of the Cadens setting page. Feel free to have her come in and out of your tags as needed!

- any questions? message me at [plurk.com profile] disarmingly
THE INN
Magmara (or Mag) has run the inn for years and has been a familiar face in that neighborhood as a woman who always made ends meet, almost in spite of the way she took care of her friends and neighbors above all else. Most weren't always sure how she managed to run the place on her own, but she made due, though she always seemed a bit overwhelmed and exhausted. When the Summoned arrived in the Cadens through that first portal, Sam managed to stumble in and make quick friends with Mag. In exchange for manual labor, fixing up and cleaning up the inn, as well as whatever other various tasks Mag needed to be done around, Sam would be given free room and board (a deal she now offers to any Summoned that arrives in the city for as long as they need it).

The inn itself is 4 floors tall, with the top three floors making up the 15 or so rooms (around five rooms per floor), and the entire bottom floor reserved for the restaurant area. The tavern makes up the entire first floor and is a large open floorplan, with a small stage in the corner, a walled-off area for the decently sized kitchen, and a large wooden bar where Mag does all her business for both the inn and tavern (where can almost always be found standing behind). It serves drinks of some variety (though not nearly as large a selection as some of the more well-known taverns) and some food (usually a single, large meal that will be served to the tenants and whoever comes in throughout the night for a moderate price). It can be busy some evenings, but in general tends to keep a more 'dive-bar' kind of feel, filled with more locals and regulars than a casual dinner-going crowd.

The rooms themselves vary from fairly simple, single-bed inn-style rooms with a small bathroom and little else, up to a two 'bedroom' suite style with small kitchenettes and spaces for sitting rooms. Each bedroom has its own small bathroom for the tenants, with cleaning, washing, and chores left to those who live there. What used to be more of a working inn now serves as a kind of boarding house for newly arrived Summoned (or simply those who won't leave), and Mag has found herself quite okay with that.

I often tease my mother that we'll keep celebrating her fortieth as long as she wants.

( His mother just laughs about that, honestly. She ages gracefully, she isn't concerned about the years. Ximena Talis is a very modest and kind woman. She sees the passing years more of a concern because she sees each of them as one more without his father, unfortunately.)

I will be thirty-three in ... two months, I guess, based on how long I've been here.

( Give him another ten years and he might not want to acknowledge birthdays past forty either! Jayce is on the vain side.)

I didn't used to celebrate much but ... uh. ( He looks sheepish and probably sounds a little sheepish.) I'm sort of a celebrity back home and it started to become more of a big deal.

(It's so much worse than that. He is the most famous person currently in Piltover, with actual merchandise and his face on the sides of blimps.)

I've got a few years on you.

( which isn't surprising but also not a big deal. jayce holds himself like someone who's much older and wiser at least from matt's interactions with him. )

But I think there's a story behind that 'sort of a celebrity' thing there. How are you sort of a celebrity?

(Jayce figured out what he wanted to do and who he wanted to be when he was barely eight years old. His intense focus and obsession with progress meant he did grow up very quickly. His childhood didn't end up being much of one, but it was by choice.

As for the celebrity status, well. It used to be something he was very proud of, he did love the attention, after being considered for so long to be crazy and strange. But in hindsight it's a little embarrassing, mostly because of how much he loved it then.)

I was doing secret experimentation for a very long time to prove that magic and technology could be used together and revolutionize our world. People were very against it, I was arrested and almost exiled for it until we proved it was true. Piltover is a city of scientists and progress, so Hextech catapulted Viktor and me to fame at the academy.

(It wasn't instant, it took years. The Council decided to back up their research, but they didn't have anything usable for several years, but after that happened, it was far beyond what anyone expected. Outside of Jayce, who has always been able to see it.)

We created something called Hexgates, instant teleportation devices to across the world. Once that happened, Piltover prospered and was the cutting edge. And I became their poster boy for innovation.

(It's complicated because Jayce is still extremely proud of Hextech and what they accomplished. It has been hard living without it. But it's all mixed in with some other things. Jayce smiles wryly, able to laugh at himself now.)

My face was literally on merchandise. Clothes, mugs, posters.

Wow.

( so, kind of like how the avengers kicked off so suddenly back where he was from. but, jayce's accomplishments were a little more helpful to the community at large while the avengers, while helpful, caused a lot of damage in their wake. )

Does everyone have access to things like that? Despite their socioeconomic standing?
hextechhead: (oh no)

[personal profile] hextechhead 2023-02-21 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm afraid not. The Hexgates are controlled by the Council, sort of like how Cadens borders and portals are. But Viktor and I were working on inventions we were hoping would be more useful to everyone.

( They made the Hexgates to prove that they could and the extreme helpfulness of the portals for everyone. It was always supposed to be a stepping stone to their own work where they could do more than just be controlled by the government. Unfortunately, they were pretty naive at the time, thinking it would happen that way. He knows better now, although he holds out some small amount of hope for the Council listening to him about the Undercity.)

Viktor's from the Undercity, the lowest class to the point where it is literally placed underneath Piltover.

( And all that symbolically means. Jayce used to be somewhat of an ally by words, and not always by deeds, until toward the end when he saw it more clearly.)

Before I came here I was hoping to give them independence and the right to their own trade routes with the Hexgates but ... I don't know what happened.

Sounds like a noble cause, working to get everyone access to things like that. I know that's an aim of a lot of people where I come from but it's hard. There's a lot of red tape and people that want to stand in your way.

( because people and organizations thought it'd be less money in their pockets if they let other people have what they had. )

Maybe you'll still get the chance when you get back there.

I only have to convince the rest of the Council, but they're a hard sell. Even with me recently being promoted to head of it.

( Jayce really was a poster boy for a lot of things, including a popular politician, for a time. Very shortly. And considering his actions, he is still just one person, a new person, in the political sphere. He won't be able to convince them through powerful insistence. It has to be through emotion over logic.)

The only way out I could see was radical, but they have many reasons to refuse. Let's just say it isn't business prudent to do it. It'll always be easier to keep the working class where it is.

Yeah, that's not...unfamiliar.

( he hadn't really thought about other worlds until this place but now that he does, he can see the similarities in other places. he wishes he didn't though. )

There's a man where I come from who puts on an act of trying to make things better for the working class but he's using them for his own means. But it's not easy for people to see that because they want things to be better.

That's also true of us, there's a crime boss named Silco. He runs the seediest parts of the Undercity, he keeps them drugged with something called Shimmer. A lot of the crimes he commits got covered up by corrupt police.

( This probably all rings very true to Matt, so there is something in common between their worlds. Jayce was about to meet with Silco, before he came here. He wonders sometimes, what the man is actually like. He never saw him and he never saw Jinx. Jinx's older sister is somewhere in here too, he saw her pink hair, and it made him think of Jinx as a young woman, not as this terrifying violence gangster.)

As bad as he is, I think overall he does care more about his people than our Council does. They don't even see them as our people. It's them and us. We've been divided a lot longer than anyone wanted to admit to.

( And as terrible as Silco was, he was trying. Corruptly, but trying. Jayce knows that there was no perfect choice, unfortunately. There was no one in the Undercity with the type of power capable of change)

I wasn't really made to be a politician.

You and me both.

( and while he doesn't trust a lot of the politicians in power, he knows that he has to work within the system for the most part to get things done. it makes things harder but it's not impossible. )

But you're right, the man I'm speaking about, he does care about people in a way. But he'll use them to for his own means. And I think they accept that because he's helped them in the past even if they can't see what's happening to them now.

I wish there was anyone else there that we could have reached out to. If I give them independence, it'll be him in power. I didn't really know what to do, if we tried to choose for them it would've just been a continuation of our control.

( There was no good answer in the end. After talking to Vi and explaining himself, even she seemed to understand that he had good reasons for his choices. He's not happy about them, he hates that he had to turn to Silco, but he couldn't give them anything without a structure. It doesn't matter though. He sighs and looks around.)

Someone from home showed up recently. She is from later in the timeline and says he's dead. Whatever I planned on trying, it failed.

( It's tough to get that news. He got more bad news than that, but it's not the kind of time or place to talk about his assumed death at a party like this.)

I'm trying to make a difference here, while we're here.

You're doing a good job, Jayce.

( matt knows that he's just one person saying that but he's read the posts on the network and he knows how hard both jayce and viktor are working on any number of projects. )

On the small scale, you and Viktor both have helped me out a few times. But, I know you're putting more into this place than a lot of other people. And I'm appreciative. So —

( he nods. )

If I can help you out with anything, let me know.
hextechhead: (Jayce-Talis-by-Lylith-st-2)

We can wrap on this, so cute.

[personal profile] hextechhead 2023-02-28 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
( Jayce looks at him, a little surprised, but that's only because his words are so kind and affirming. He has been working on not seeking approval from others more often, but it's different when it's offered without an attempt. Because it's genuine, and he believes Matt. He smiles and reaches over to pat Matt gently on the back, a friendly gesture meant to emphasize his appreciation.)

Thank you, Matt. It means a lot to hear you say that. I promise I'll let you know.
