Appearance isn't something that Lucifer is drawn to, though he can appreciate and understand the artistry of it just the same as anyone.

It's not even that very-human sense about 'it's what's on the inside that counts.' Or it is, but it's more. Soul-deep. Passion and ingenuity. Inspiration and creativity. Acuity and aptitude. The depths of what Pops poured into mind and being. The parts that were so strong and loud that Lucifer could tweak to send over the edge because they were just that bright.

This isn't a soul he's tried to tarnish, albeit because from the start he wanted to use it as a shield, and oftentimes those function better without corruption.

Now Lucifer just wants to know what Istredd's soul tastes like. If there's something that sets mages apart from witches and humans. If there's some deeper meaning that drew Lucifer in and kept him interested. Pity that he can't actually taste it. ... Safely.

Lucifer knows how to dress up, if he rarely does. Money is always tight, especially with his later plans and his missed trip to Nocwich's Hunting Grounds. Typically he holds onto Thorne's "allowances" that they are so kind give. He doesn't need trinkets or goods, though weaponry would be nice, but that's always risky. He'd hold to his coin here, too, except...

Well. He can rock that devilish title from time to time. And now that he's well aware (at last) that someone is looking, oh, he's going to flaunt it just a bit and have fun with it and preen as much as he damn well feels like.

I don't know what you're so worried about, Lucifer says from the doorway, snuck in and having been leaning against the frame.

While his mind is nearly clear now--just a few occasional twitches towards static, but they're rare--he purposely kept it as much on stealth as he could manage so that Istredd couldn't sense him coming. He recognizes that might just startle the man, but he wanted a moment to watch him while Istredd was consumed in his own distractions.

Lucifer can feel the underlined nervous tics from Istredd, but his own confidence may be enough for the both of them. "You are stunning."

Kahlil hasn't yet completely figured out the whole Lucifer-Castiel-Michael connection.

He gives Istredd a sidelong glance.

"No reason. You've both just been, ah, sequestered."

Which isn't really strange, all (recent) things considered. But still.

"Yes, I've already been," Sabine offers readily.

There's a just as ready warmth that brightens up her face at the mention of the communal liminal space. It hadn't been hard to reach or to understand. It was a place she'd felt intimately familiar with from the moment she woke up in it. She hadn't decided if it was more curious if it existed or that through it, she could watch the colts all around learning to use it.

"I'll have to keep an eye out for your library the next time I'm there. Anything specific I should be looking for?" She couldn't simply assume libraries might look the same universes over. Knowledge was not kept the same in every universe or realm within and beyond those. "What sorts of books do you have?"

This information fills in a few things for Jayden that he'd been missing and also answers a particular lingering fear; someone he'd known in the pit had disappeared, but there hadn't been any indication he'd been killed. Perhaps he'd just returned to his world and its weird two-headed animals, which hadn't sounded like the best place, but it had been better than the pit. It's even better if the people who left didn't remember anything.

It's almost strange to feel reassured about something, especially unexpectedly, after how awful almost everything has been for most of his time in Abraxas. But he's certainly not complaining, taking a moment to turn what Istredd told him over in his head a few times, and there is something amidst the rest of it that stands out a bit.

"'Problem Summoned?'" He hadn't heard about anyone in the Summoned causing particular issues or, alternatively, the factions deciding they don't like a particular Summoned, but whatever the story--or stories--there, it seems worth knowing.

For the first week, Wilhelm recuperates in his room, leaving only to take meals in the dining hall. Dipping into the Horizon keeps him from going stir crazy, and Elrond, recovering from their ordeal too, provides built-in company when the elf's not absorbed in one of the many books he keeps within reach of his bed.

In the second week, when his wounds have staved off infection long enough to seal up completely, he resumes training with Kyle. Though, they return to the basics and stay there for now, to let his body get accustomed again.

Around this time, he expects to hear from Istredd regarding his magic lessons too, and this invites a sense of dread to sit in his gut. Not for practicing his magic. After relying on his connection with fire to survive the plunging temperatures on the mountainside, he's more confident in his abilities than he's ever been.

But he can't forget how he'd screamed and shoved and spat at Istredd, only for the mage to be dead right. There were no ghosts among them in the pit; there were only his own delusions decomposing his mind. They hadn't talked much after that. Wilhelm's stubborn pride made sure of it.

So he dreads, but no message comes.

By the third week, he decides to meet this thing head on. It probably looms larger in his mind than the reality of it warrants. He knows how his anxiety amplifies everything into a crisis that nobody else can see. Though, by the time he enters the tower that occupies Istredd's domain, he's second guessing himself. It's equally likely that Istredd, realizing what a petulant child he is, has made up his mind to discard him as a student.

As Wilhelm wanders up the curving staircase to the second floor, the ravens flock to him. They land, wings fluttering, on the bannister beside him and swap perches so that they still shadow him as he goes up. They caw and tilt their heads in curiosity.

"You'll have no problems there." Grabbing attention, that is. Lucifer even hopes Istredd manages to pull the eye of the Thorne officials; stick it to them. Stick it to all of them for just using them as their little tools.

Any tool can be too sharp. Thorne will learn that one day, Lucifer will make them see it.

He ghosts a touch just under Istredd's tie, grinning, but doesn't mess it up despite the desire very noticeably being there.

Pity, he says, with no sympathy his plight. He's brimming with satisfaction. But I suppose if you think it could help, he adds, which alone should be an Early Warning sign as he makes the "painstaking" move to shoulder out of his jacket, holding it up by the collar alone, like that could possibly help even though they both very well know it only makes things worse.

"If you do magic then you don't have to talk to anyone," Lucifer points out. He just has to do what he's already good at and people will keep their distance, though they may approach him afterwards. Still, there are worse things. It's not a speech.

That's the best compliment anyone could give me, he practically trills at being called 'such a problem'. This really should be no surprise.

"Last chance," he offers, but there's no seriousness to the words, no overwhelming levels of doubt from the early parts of that night. Last chance to back out, to not go through with whatever this is between them. To simply let it go. "Otherwise," he continues, leaning into Istredd's space, "I am dragging you out to that dance floor."

"A few barfights, and people are pretty pissed off in general, but— they got good medics in Free Cities. We'll do fine."

She doesn't like to think about the sap, to be honest. It's one of those things that was too... uncertain. She didn't really understand the action of medi-gel either, but Shepard had spent a long time comforting herself that someone did, that the whole medical system upon which it rested had looked at the stuff with important words like 'peer review' and 'patent file' and that it had all checked out according to multiple governmental bodies, councils, and jackasses in lab coats with degrees.

Sap was goo, by comparison. Goo from a tree. What sense did that make, as a medicine? So she distracts herself.

Rooibos is good for that, incidentally, and in short order he has Shepard crooning and earning himself some chin-scritches and promises of treats. And wouldn't he like a better name for such a big and good bird, like maybe killer? Shepard thinks he might.

"I think after being kidnapped to an alternate dimension, having a second, less kind kidnapping is almost a relief— at least we knew where we stood with those freaks. I don't know how it goes elsewhere, but in Free Cities they're downright nice about it, all things considered. It's pretty damn disorienting."

[Ah. Less about Summoned being unreasonable, more about them being inconvenient to a faction's goals. He'd heard only a little about the Summoned that had been the first brought in by Thorne, but everything about that situation sounds like it had been terrible, and that--as well as the other factions' attitudes toward the Summoned--had been something in the back of Jayden's mind that he'd planned to learn more about after settling in.

Those plans had been interrupted by the cultist death pit, however, and he hasn't exactly had the strength or motivation to try and learn more about this world's politics just yet. But having stumbled onto the topic now, the faint senses of curiosity and trepidation that he'd had before are returning.]

Which faction are you in?

[He should ask that first, he supposes; he's never seen Istredd in the Free Cities, but that really doesn't mean much, as he hadn't actually met all that many Summoned outside of the pit and hasn't been particularly social since they were rescued.]

He hums at that, but doesn't push. Maybe when Istredd is feeling better he'll tease him a bit. More seriously, he remains worried about the man. While Kahlil can't hold what Lucifer did on the mountain against him, he also can't fully trust that the divine being won't lose control again in the same way again.

(a flash of Jath'ibaye/John's fist through Kahlil's chest, the Rifter's face pale with shock hanging over him - the impossible memory flares again now)

He shakes his head suddenly.

"Did he?" Kahlil frowns deeply, feeling a small stab of guilt. But even if he could've prevented the man's death, he couldn't reasonably have shadowed Lucifer everywhere while they were trying to cover as much ground as possible...

"No offense intended, but - does he have money...?" So few of them do. Kell has a job, he knows. And Kahlil would offer some of the coin he earned, if needed. He's not really surprised that Lucifer would want to maintain decent standing in Nott, he's more surprised that he'd intend to follow through.

It brought her up short, the question. To what end? To what fucking end?

"Honestly, if you ever fully understand what's going on in the heads of people who deliberately do what those people tried to pull, that's a real problem," Shepard said, not looking away from the bird, though looking was all she was doing, "But believe it or not, this isn't my first time dealing with a fungus cult. Or a bunch of people preaching doomsday while worshiping something they don't understand."

But then, wasn't Abraxas just cults all the way down? There had been more than one reason for her to join the Free Cities army, after all. Say whatever you wanted, at least they were practical. You push people too far, either you won, or it blew up in your face. And whatever the odds, the consequences...

Some things you don't touch. Some sleeping dogs are best left lie.

"If you ask me, they probably had no real idea why they were doing it. Someone else wanted power, or information, or some way to replicate the transformation they were trying to put us through— Hell, maybe they even believed half that shit about being chosen. But in any case, they were just somebody's grunts."

Which didn't make them innocent. In a way, it made them worse; anyone can do evil in a moment of weakness. But to choose that kind of brutality, to go in knowing what you were doing, day after day, weeks on end, watching the consequences in as much detail as anyone could imagine... Even if they were sorry about it now, it was as much as to say that they'd known all along that what they were doing was wrong, and had done it anyways. And for what? Some higher ideal, some necessary purpose, something that might somehow make the suffering worthwhile and lend it value?

Or was it just because someone else had told them to do it, and nothing more.

"Even odds what they'll do with Creed, though," Shepard remembers herself then, and gives Rooibos another few scratches before trying to fob him off onto a nearby shelf, with limited success, "My money's on an execution. You might get away with murder if you're quiet, but nobody gets away with publicly embarrassing the people in charge."

The voice of experience.

She shares in his sense of humor as she takes a seat by his bedside, already leaning over to pour them both a cup of tea.

"Steve is always very heroic like that. It's almost downright embarrassing, honestly." her lips quirk as she pours one cup and then fills another. "At least all those muscles come in handy for something every now and then, though."

She reaches out to offer him one of the teacups, meeting his gaze. "I'm pretty sure I've never been bored a single moment in your classroom. But I'll be sure to let you know if that changes. It must be good to have access to your magic again. I understand that was pretty unstable down there."

Jayden has definitely not heard any of this. Of course, what little he'd been told about Thorne's experiments with the original Summoned had already given him something of a poor impression of Thorne, but it had been very vague; this is much more direct, much more concrete, and a bit shockingly so.

He knows better than to assume that nothing can be done just because it hasn't been done yet, but is also well aware that he doesn't have enough context or information to jump immediately to possible solutions. But this feels like something that should be much more of a priority than it seems to have been, and he folds his arms, tapping his fingers against his side in agitation.

"Does everyone know about this? That this is what you're all dealin' with there?"
