WELCOME TO THE FREE CITIES!

WELCOME TO THE FREE CITIES!
Welcome to The Free Cities! The portal exits outside the capital city of Cadens. The first impression of the city is its sheer size. It sprawls out across the landscape like a great hulking beast at rest. The wall that encircles it barely contains it, the buildings of Cadens practically bulging against its restraint.

The air here seems thicker somehow, tinged with a scent that’s acrid and smoky. Smog hangs high over the city, belched out by smokestacks that tower over the industrial district. The desert stretches out behind it, dotted with towers and dust clouds that disappear into the horizon. Multiple gates lead inside and each is staffed by soldiers in unfamiliar uniforms that wave a steady stream of people through without appearing to pay much attention. People are coming and going almost all of the time, to and from the outposts and areas of activity around the city proper. It’s difficult to tell just what’s out there beyond the impression of tall metal structures and a great deal of labor. Wagons carrying travelers to Libertas and Aquila roll out from the Travel Post outside the city wall.

Anyone who can sense magic will notice a much lower concentration here. No one will be stopped or questioned at the gate, even if the soldiers seem to take note of the fugitives from Thorne.

The activity and sheer number of citizens can be overwhelming. It’s crowded and loud and feels constantly in motion with everyone talking and yelling over each other. It’s easy to get swept up in the ever-moving throng or find oneself ducking into the mouth of a narrow alley just to breathe.

Anyone who’s willing to make their way to the northern part of the city and Portham Hall will find Prime Minister Marlo Reiner available to receive them.

[ there is a semi-sense of relief when she gestures to the table. not necessarily because he believes she would have told him no, but this is still a new city. a new world. sam is still figuring out his footing and where things stand. he doesn't worry about it for some, but every now and then he feels himself almost subconsciously tense.

and it's that release of tension she might pick up on, when he settles across from her with his drink. sam does take note of how much better she looks, with clothes that aren't all but a prison uniform, and clean, too. it feels good, knowing that she was able to get out. he may not know ciri all that well, but he'd been worried - because of geralt, yes, but also just for her. though, if her knives at hr side are anything to go by, she obviously doesn't need anyone worrying after her.

sam gives something of an easy chuckle, setting into his seat with his elbows on the tabletop, looking all the part comfortable right where he is. ]

Yeah, I'm kind of hard to get rid of. [ but then sam shakes his head, appearing to shake off whatever joke he'd been trying to tell. ] And I might have directed Geralt this way when it all went south. [ a shrug. he's totally not at all pretending to maybe take credit for corralling everyone that he did in the free cities. nope. ]

How's the city treating you?

[ Directed him? Ciri's eyes remain sharp on his face a few moments longer, but she doesn't comment on it. If this man really did influence Geralt's decision, Geralt must trust or at least respect him enough to consider his opinion worthwhile. It's also possible Sam is just saying things, though. Or believes his opinion more important than it is.

Whatever the case, they're here now. ]

Better than the dungeon. [ It's not much of an answer. ] There is drink and I am able to bathe. An improvement all around.

[ okay, maybe directing is a bit of a stretch. but if ciri isn't going to call him on it, sam will let it stand. geralt deserves someone giving him shit on a more normal basis anyway. and whether or not sam tone comes through, it's pretty obvious he's not taking himself that seriously.

it's a very careful balance, ciri. but the heart of it is probably the fact that sam kind of feels like they sort of have grounds to walk on in terms of knowing each other, whether or not they do.

he snorts at that, shaking his head. ]
Yeah, okay. Point taken. But it hasn't been that bad, has it? I'm guessing Jaskier is making enough to put y'all up somewhere decent?

[ Ciri takes a swig of her beer and sets it down with a smile. She hasn't really gotten a chance to get acquainted with Sam well, but she knows vaguely he's been helpful to Geralt, and it comes as no surprise then that he knows Jaskier, since they'd both been among those 'welcomed' in Thorne (though it's probably more accurate to say they were just captives treated well within the city instead of in the dungeons).

She shrugs a bit. ]

Not all bad. The food, in particular, is quite good. And yes, we've got a room at an inn not far from here. Lucky for us that Jaskier's talents are inter-dimensionally recognized, it seems.

If you're here for the food, you need to come by one night when I'm making dinner.

[ now this is when sam's ego is going to come into play. geralt or no geralt, he can brag about his own cooking. he breaks into a bit of a grin, taking a long drink of his own beer. ] Can you do spicy? I can work around it, if needed.

[ at the mention of jaskier's talents, though, sam lets out a laugh, lifting his glass at that. ] No matter what world or where you end up, someone will always have a need for a good song, and he does know how to work a room.

But that's good to know- I'm staying not far from here too. Maybe...fifteen minutes that direction? [ he points off in some direction of the tavern, towards whatever block or street he's settled into with peter and alina and mal. ] Now you have no excuse not to come over for food. We're too close.

[ Ciri cocks her head. Not really what she'd meant (more that she'd enjoyed the market food) but he's so eager to invite her over, and she has to admit she's curious about him. Mostly because Geralt seems to trust him. ]

Spicy? I think so.

Are you renting a place with a kitchen of your own?

[ with that settled, sam seems to relax a bit more, nodding at her question. ]

It's not a huge place, but it's down the road and the owner has been nice enough to let us use the house's main kitchen when we need to. [ is it because sam is actually a pretty decent handyman and has....gone about fixing most every part of the building the woman owns? maybe. is it because he's just won her over with charm and southern manners? more likely. but he's not all that worried about it, and gives off the impression he can adapt to just about any situation, given the time. ]

And I've been looking for a reason to really use it.

Well, then. It'd be a shame to waste your eagerness to provide us with a free meal.

[ Ciri decides with a smirk, taking a nice long drink of her ale. She says us like Geralt (and Jaskier) are part of the deal, but considering Sam is Geralt's... acquaintance more than hers, it seems a fair assumption. ]
