WELCOME TO THE FREE CITIES!

WELCOME TO THE FREE CITIES!
Welcome to The Free Cities! The portal exits outside the capital city of Cadens. The first impression of the city is its sheer size. It sprawls out across the landscape like a great hulking beast at rest. The wall that encircles it barely contains it, the buildings of Cadens practically bulging against its restraint.

The air here seems thicker somehow, tinged with a scent that’s acrid and smoky. Smog hangs high over the city, belched out by smokestacks that tower over the industrial district. The desert stretches out behind it, dotted with towers and dust clouds that disappear into the horizon. Multiple gates lead inside and each is staffed by soldiers in unfamiliar uniforms that wave a steady stream of people through without appearing to pay much attention. People are coming and going almost all of the time, to and from the outposts and areas of activity around the city proper. It’s difficult to tell just what’s out there beyond the impression of tall metal structures and a great deal of labor. Wagons carrying travelers to Libertas and Aquila roll out from the Travel Post outside the city wall.

Anyone who can sense magic will notice a much lower concentration here. No one will be stopped or questioned at the gate, even if the soldiers seem to take note of the fugitives from Thorne.

The activity and sheer number of citizens can be overwhelming. It’s crowded and loud and feels constantly in motion with everyone talking and yelling over each other. It’s easy to get swept up in the ever-moving throng or find oneself ducking into the mouth of a narrow alley just to breathe.

Anyone who’s willing to make their way to the northern part of the city and Portham Hall will find Prime Minister Marlo Reiner available to receive them.

[ It's a fairly decent offer, but now he and his partner in crime (if dishonesty can be called a crime, but Mal thinks they probably deserve it for committing daylight robbery) are on a roll, he wants to go one step further. One last step because he knows he's already testing the seller's patience. ]

How about you throw in an extra one for free? [ He picks up the bun in question, knowing he's being cheeky, but he follows up his audacity by adding - ] And in return, we spread a rumor about how that other seller's breads sends you straight to the toilet. You've heard this girl. [ He gestures to Ciri. ] She isn't afraid to speak her mind. They'll be out of business by next market day.

[ He'd never spread a rumor like this if the other booth actually existed - but it doesn't, and if this seller goes looking for it next week, it won't be there either way. ]

Do we have a deal?

[ It seems the shopkeeper has reached a saturation point for dishonesty, and isn't buying any more. The skinny old man crosses his arms and puffs up his chest, glaring at them both. ]

You young folk are all disgraceful and disrespectful these days, aren't ya? I'm not givin' ya freebies for rumors. Knocked down the price already, ya brats. Take it or leave it!

[ Ciri bites back a snicker, glancing at her companion, and shrugs. Seems the shopkeep may have an inkling they're lying, and she is pretty hungry. ]

Fine, fine. We'll take it.

[ She nudges the young man with an elbow, offering a few of her own coins to split the price. And as soon as the food is in her hands, she adds under her breath: ]

And we'll tell our friends what a tightfisted whoreson you are too.

[ These buns had better be delicious. ]

[ Mal winces inwardly at his plan not working, but at least the seller doesn't take back his offer altogether. He'll take it even if he resents being called a brat.

He offers his half of the price, roughly handling over the money because even if they're being dishonest, the man seems unpleasant. He probably resents kids and doesn't have any of his own.

He laughs at what she calls him as they leave, looking back at the old man to wave at him cheerfully, which only makes him scowl more. ]

Sorry, I thought it was worth a shot. [ He apologizes for his failed plan. ] I'm Mal. Are you from around here or... [ He pauses, unsure how to word being a fugitive from Thorne. ] Out of town?

Not at all. Appreciate the backup.

[ Ciri reaches for one of the buns when they manage to elbow their way out of the worst of the crowds of people rushing back and forth between stalls. They duck behind an unhorsed wagon, and Ciri starts in on her bread. ]

Mmh. Not bad. Not worth double though, and he knows it.

[ Honestly, they probably got the regular price, when they didn't fall for the jacked-up one like some tourists.

Speaking of... ]

Out of town. [ She's got no problem admitting that, considering so many of the people in Cadens would define themselves as out of towners too. She doesn't know enough about this world to keep up a facade for long, but doesn't plan to need to. ]

I'm Ciri.
