WELCOME TO THE FREE CITIES!
WELCOME TO THE FREE CITIES!
Welcome to The Free Cities! The portal exits outside the capital city of Cadens. The first impression of the city is its sheer size. It sprawls out across the landscape like a great hulking beast at rest. The wall that encircles it barely contains it, the buildings of Cadens practically bulging against its restraint.
The air here seems thicker somehow, tinged with a scent that’s acrid and smoky. Smog hangs high over the city, belched out by smokestacks that tower over the industrial district. The desert stretches out behind it, dotted with towers and dust clouds that disappear into the horizon. Multiple gates lead inside and each is staffed by soldiers in unfamiliar uniforms that wave a steady stream of people through without appearing to pay much attention. People are coming and going almost all of the time, to and from the outposts and areas of activity around the city proper. It’s difficult to tell just what’s out there beyond the impression of tall metal structures and a great deal of labor. Wagons carrying travelers to Libertas and Aquila roll out from the Travel Post outside the city wall.
Anyone who can sense magic will notice a much lower concentration here. No one will be stopped or questioned at the gate, even if the soldiers seem to take note of the fugitives from Thorne.
The activity and sheer number of citizens can be overwhelming. It’s crowded and loud and feels constantly in motion with everyone talking and yelling over each other. It’s easy to get swept up in the ever-moving throng or find oneself ducking into the mouth of a narrow alley just to breathe.
Anyone who’s willing to make their way to the northern part of the city and Portham Hall will find Prime Minister Marlo Reiner available to receive them.

Though judging by that wagging tail, perhaps not. He raises an eyebrow. A part of him relaxes. Really? The deer came back with two predators for friends? Stranger things, he supposes.
He sighs. The faintest tension remains in him, at the lion, but Geralt does not otherwise react. If Louis recognizes them, manifested them, then he likely has some control over them. The how and why, he'll...work on that another time. When he hasn't got a fucking lion staring him down. ]
Are we finished? Can I leave you with these illusions of yours or am I to return tomorrow to find a deer shredded to pieces?

But he's got all his composure back now. He strides to his cabinets, feigning disinterest in the carnivores that are now looking at him, but they're in view through the corner of his eye.]
Lion, the intimidation tactics aren't necessary. Geralt is an associate of mine.
[The lion's eyes flick to Louis, and the growling stops. His face falls into a more relaxed expression, seeming downright studious with the glasses on, and he pads away from the front door, sitting down besides the table to start licking his paw. Despite his newly languid body language, his eyes remain on Geralt, perfectly focused as he grooms. The wolf sniffs at the lion curiously, but is completely ignored.
Louis meanwhile is doing a pretty good job of acting like he thinks all this is TOTALLY FINE AND NORMAL while he rifles through his cabinets.] I do believe I promised you payment in exchange for your help?

He eyes them for a moment longer before turning away, leaning back against one of the walls. If they're not aggressive towards him, he sees no reason to keep his defenses up, so. Now there's two of them, both behaving as if this is totally fine and normal. Which, who the fuck knows. Maybe it is. Geralt hasn't encountered precisely this situation, but he sure as hell has seen stranger.
At the mention of payment, his gaze slides towards Louis. ] Mm-hmm.
[ That he did. And Geralt will be collecting, thank you, and then on his way. They both got what they wanted here: Louis his ticket into the Horizon; Geralt with some information out of the test run. He's seen enough, at least, to believe it might be worth bringing Ciri inside, if she wants, rather than leaving her cut off from a portion of the world. ]
