[ Lestat moves around the castle, finding ways to pass the time and amuse himself. He's seen the other man around, noted occasionally his comings-and-goings but only as their paths happen to more or less cross. He must be looking a little too intently this time, because he's a bit startled to be spoken to. ]

A guide?

[ He regards the portal a little, then shrugs and clasps his hands together with an amused smile. ]

Why not? Sure.

[ This is a new accent for his collection (and another redhead, the Singularity has an affinity for them). ]

Kyle. [ Kahlil offers his name to get that out of the way. He can't place this man's name, though. Must be relatively new. He adjusts the strap of his satchel and nods toward the portal, stepping through first in case the other man has any hesitations about using magic transportation.

Assuming he follows, he glance over his shoulder with both eyebrows raised. ]

Is this your first time? [ In Nott. The rules are a little unclear to newcomers, sometimes. They're generally free to travel as long as they can come up with a good excuse or have a regular job, but some are more cautious than others. ]

Lestat.

[ It's only polite, isn't it, to introduce one's self when someone else has done it.

And he does follow, because, really, he doesn't have anything better to do with his time. He's also not going to turn down an opportunity to get away from the castle for a moment. Being caged up isn't sitting so well with him. ]

I've been briefly, when all any of us could do was try to find information. I didn't have a prolonged enough stay to get to know it much.

[ He nods at that, and as they step through they find themselves at the front gates of the city, allowed passage by the guards. Compared to the opulence of Castle Thorne, Nott's streets are older and rundown. The streets are lightly crowded in the evening, street performers playing music and casting small spells. It won't be long before they pass the first beggar seated next to an empty storefront. ]

Anywhere in particular you're looking for? [ Drinks? Shops? A beat, then: ] Keep an eye on your pockets.

[ And any valuables. Though, if he's new, the chances are he's short on those as well as coin. But the warning still stands, there's usually pickpockets mingling in the crowds, look for easy marks. ]

[ He doesn't mind Nott. While Lestat's developed a taste for things more luxurious, the streets and the oldness of them reminds him of older parts of Paris. The poor parts, where he himself once had to live in a drafty loft while scraping up money. But while he doesn't mind the look of things, he's also not terribly nostalgic, and the comparison comes and goes without too much feeling attached to it. ]

I wouldn't say I'm in search of anything in particular, no. Just along for the ride, as they say.

[ Kahlil nods, and from there leads them on a direct path to a large apothecary where he drops off a package in exchange for another, swapping them in and out of his satchel. From there it's down a few more streets to some even older buildings, though these have a stately kind of look to them. Administration offices for the city of Nott. He goes in and out of there swiftly too, leaving Lestat outside alone for a little while before he pops back out again. There are less panhandlers in this part of the neighborhood, less thievery going on in general with an increased presence of guards.

By the time he's done most of the shops have closed and he leads the way to a nearby tavern. Those on the streets who have access to shelter have vanished, leaving only the least fortunate stuck outside.

The doors to the tavern are open, the inside warmly lit and the raucous noise audible from the street. ]

What do you usually drink? [ Kahlil leads them to a corner table, eyeing the bar with a wry look. The selections in Nott are still slim thanks to last year's attacks affecting crops and stores. ]

{ He tags along in mild fascination, watching the ease and swiftness of the parcel exchange as if it's some sort of odd dance. He doesn't mind being left alone outside, either, taking the opportunity to study the people and the surroundings. Lestat is watching some people in conversation across the street when Kahlil returns. ]

I'm not terribly fussy.

{ Though it's hard to miss the quick and amused smile on his lips at the question. Truthfully, he'll drink anything, even if it's tasteless to him. }

You're a courier, then?

[ Beer it is then, he knows the wine here tends to be watered down. As he waves over a serving woman and gives the order, a man near the hearth picks up a fiddle and starts playing a lively tune with quick fingers. ]

I am. [ he returns, lifting and tipping his mug toward Lestat as soon as the drinks are placed on the table. He takes a drink and sets it down. ]

Despite what they tell you, there's work to be found for those who'd rather make their own coin.

[ Instead of waiting for allowances from the castle for whatever mandatory event they're being sent on next. ]

{ Lestat gives a slight toast in turn, taking a sip himself. }

Yes, I've heard some unenthusiastic reviews regarding our hosts. It can't be so bad, can it? We're kept in a gilded cage but at least we're well-kept.

{ He absolutely wants the gossip. He knows it's there, but it's not the sort of thing you can ask about when you're within the walls of the castle. }

[ It's definitely safer to gossip here in Nott where there's a lack of good will felt toward the castle. ]

It wasn't always that way. [ The gilded cage. ] Not for everyone that first arrived in Thorne.

[ This isn't a secret. If Lestat were to ask around with other Summoned he'd find the same story. Kahlil shakes his head. ]

I arrived later, but there are a few who are still around that were here for the start. It was only Thorne that was Summoning us back then, and they claimed that some people had been Summoned by mistake. They were imprisoned in the dungeons instead of fancy rooms.

For my sake, I'm glad they seem to have learned the error of their ways.

{ Well, it would have been hell to pay if he'd been thrown in a dungeon, which might have just gotten him thrown somewhere worse. But it might have also been more peaceful than the idea of dormitories. }

I suppose I should crack open the history books more often.

[ He tips his head to that statement, drumming his fingers on the table. ]

You haven't yet? [ Lightly teasing with a half grin. ]

You might find the ones in the library wanting. Thorne heavily curates the past.

I have, though my reading as been a little more focused than general history of Thorne or of the Summoned. There's only so much reading one can do before they go a bit stir crazy.

{ He gives a slightly demur bow of his head and sips his drink, followed by a small smile of his own. }

Which is why it's so nice to have this opportunity to get out of the castle for a brief moment. And meet someone new, of course.

[ He gives a light, amused huff. Lestat's charming, it catches him off guard a bit. And his eyes are almost distracting now that they're seated across from each other - he breaks eye contact a little more frequently than he otherwise might, overcompensating so it doesn't appear that he's too focused on the strangeness of the color. ]

What is it that you've been looking into?

[ Maybe he could be of some help there too. ]

{ Lestat seems delighted to get such a reaction, making his own smile a little more prominent, easing a little more into the conversation. }

Hayle, mostly. I find it intriguing, and of course the fact that I can't simply go there makes it all the more appealing to me.

[ That makes two of them. He raises both eyebrows again. ]

There was a rumor over the winter that the duchess of Hayle was looking to recruit Summoned for her university. Maybe less appealing if you're already tired of libraries, though.

Is that so?

{ Now that is interesting. Lestat goes from politely and coyly interested to genuinely intrigued, and he keeps a steady gaze on the other man while he takes a drink from his cup. }

Was it a simply a rumour, or do you know of anyone who did it?

[ He clocks the interest, but shakes his head. Kahlil doesn't know anyone whose visited the university yet, though he knows at least one who might consider it one day. ]

Just a rumor. Same as the one about the High Mage and the Duchess not getting along. [ That one has more legs, though.

There's no real ulterior motive on his part for sharing any of this. It's not the sort of information that'd be hard to figure out eventually, asking around, so he's not risking anything by sharing either. He gives a half shrug. ]

Either way, I figure you'd need some kind of natural skill for magic to even get accepted.

[ Beyond what he's already learned. ]
