[animals-are-welcome policy in the wilson horizon-home, then. that's good to know. wanda didn't think it'd be reason for sam to throw a fit, anyway. she moves along towards the back of the house, only to have sam intercept her at the kitchen.
she smiles a bit, a knowing kind of smile, because sam's always been so keen over redwing, that kind of affection surely pushed towards real birds, too, right?]
He's the youngest raven in my Horizon. Just showed up, so— I think he hatched a few months back.
[lifting her hand a bit, the raven preens, tilting its head towards sam.]
My place is a little too crowded, and I thought maybe he could hang around here and grow into his wings.
[ oh, animals are definitely a welcome policy. if she hasn't seen a large white wolf make its way through, then she's certainly seen at least a passing glance of red - sam's falcon that follows him around back in the real abraxas world.
so yes - animals are welcome, birds especially, and that'll become especially apparent when sam's attention - once they find each other in the kitchen - shifts from what would have been the normal hug to the raven currently preening on her hand. sam's face brightens a bit as he leans in, not close enough to startle but enough to get a good look. ]
Oh- he's a baby then. Hello there little one. [ he gentle brings up his hand, waiting to see what the raven will do and if he's a jumpy one or a friendly type. ] He's welcome to stay as long as he wants. Red's usually flying around here too, so he'll have a little bit of company. Does he have a name?
[ sorry, wanda - sam knows there's probably something more important to discuss, but right now he has to get this bird to like him. that is top priority. ]
Who knows, maybe he'll change into something else when you do name him. A different bird, I mean.
[things are strange like that, particularly with constructs in the horizon. her heart is marred with a certain kind of darkness, an ever-present guilt and shame, so the birds she brought forth are ravens: intelligent, just in their judgement, but equally cruel when slighted.
it's her first time 'gifting' one of these ravens to anyone, to remain in their domain. maybe upon having a name given by a person such as sam, it will grow out of its ashen-gray feathers and become something sam is more familiar with. or, perhaps—]
He might stay a raven, though.
[—if sam feels strongly about keeping her thought of a gift intact, untouched by his own thoughts and feelings.
she waits for sam to raise his arm, and then gently moves so that the raven can hop over onto him. it is sam's now.]
[ sam beams a bit at the idea of it, of naming him, of the fact he could change to something else. truthfully, he'd be perfectly happy with the little raven just as he is - because it is wanda's, it is a part of wanda, and there isn't anything about that he really wants to change. ]
That's alright. [ if the bird wishes to stay a raven, he means. and he does eventually lift his arm, and watches as the little one hops on over to him. he is still so small, there's no telling what he'll come to look like, but sam's pretty alright with that.
and as if on cue, red does come flying through the room - probably through an open window somewhere. in the horizon he looks almost exactly like he does in real life - the red and silver and black feathers of the small red shouldered hawk just a tad brighter, a tad less natural, and more matching of what sam's falcon suit used to look like. red glides through the room, making a large circle until he comes to a landing on wanda's shoulder - his attention on the little raven rather than the two humans there.
sam laughs a little - at the birds, at the very obvious observation wanda makes, at himself. ] This is getting a little weird, isn't it.
[ wanda would have no idea of this, probably, but of course the only thing sam is thinking about right now is the hard time he gave t'challa for liking cats. god, he's that weird now, isn't he. ]
[wanda can't help but snort, the smile on her face remaining despite her best efforts to seem unaffected by the situation. she knows that many of the avengers-types can be intimidating or otherwise have this kind of reputation about them.
but wanda feels privileged in knowing these small things about them that make them exceptionally human. steve with his art, sam with his love for birds, and natasha's — well, that's a secret between the both of them.]
Maybe we can let them get to know each other.
[with this, she sets for one of the open windows and has red hop on down her arm onto the sill. she brushes a finger lightly over the top of his head, letting him preen under the touch. the young raven follows soon at wanda's unspoken behest. though seeming a little shy, it follows after red when the hawk takes flight towards a nearby tree.
wanda lingers there for a moment, hands on the frame of the window, then turning back around to face sam.
[ there's a bit of a pause where he waits for wanda's answer, before sam is just sort of nodding in agreement. because...yeah. she's right. it's definitely weird. very weird. and his whole thing isn't even bird-themed anymore...
wanda snorts at him, and lets out an easy sort of chuckle as he watches head over to the window and suggests they let them get to know each other. he can't help the fond sorta smile that takes over as the small raven tilts his head, curious, as red takes off and the raven quickly follows after.
when she's turned back to him, his own smile brightens, as if he can sense her good mood. he's going to take advantage of this, he thinks. even if small talk feels...good, but a little surprising. either way, he did decide to take advantage, so sam is going to close the distance back to his kitchen - heading to the fridge. ]
Honestly? Busy, but that's my fault. I should have known becoming a representative was going to have it's drawbacks. [ his tone of voice is that of someone who knows exactly what he did, and what consequences he would face. let him complain a little, wanda, please. ] On top of actually getting back to things and...everything else. Feels a bit like I haven't stopped moving.
[ somewhere amid the talking he's gotten into the fridge and pulled out two beers, holding one up to wanda to see if she even wants it before letting the door fall closed again. ]
[granted, she has kind of disconnected herself from that, trusting that aloy and louis got the hang of things. nanaue, obviously, could do nothing wrong. she supposes it fits sam, though, aiming for something like that.
she makes a knowing face about his complaining, but stays otherwise mum about it; she knows what fights to pick.]
So… [he’s going to get them beers, isn’t he? it’s such an american thing. or maybe just a guy thing.] You’re saying that we’re back to some months ago when you somehow forgot that napping, sleeping, and resting are words that exist in your vocabulary.
[wanda will not hold back on criticizing his choices.]
You’ve got to learn to take a break. You always told me that.
[when she’d train in the compound’s gym to get stronger and fitter, she never believed in the idea of ‘rest days’. perhaps it was a mix of her depression, of her anger, of wanting to prove herself—so, sam always made sure to remind her it was okay to stop for a moment.
she takes the beer from him when he offers it, and—very casually—sits herself up on the counter, right by the sink. her back to the window, she can feel the sunlight hitting her back, warming her up, and it casts homely kind of shadows against the fixtures of the kitchen. wanda links her ankles and swings her legs a bit, the unopened beer on her hands, on her lap.
there’s a small smile on her face at his question. a question she doesn’t answer.]
Do you see or talk to Matt often?
[sam could probably tell where this is going if he cared to put some thought into it.]
It makes sense - I feel like I've spent more time here trying to get the Summoned to work together and with the people here. Might as well be the middle man to get shit done. [ his tone, at first, is casual - there's nothing all that special about it, nothing all that different now. but then, right as he nears the end of that comment, he's gonna glance back to her with a kind of look, putting up both hands for air quotes. ] 'Officially', at least.
[ and yes, he does get them both a beer. though it is the horizon, so her bottle can be literally anything she wants it to be once it's in her hands. which is kind of what sam expects whenever he gets anyone a drink - this place is everyone's to make comfortable, he only lays the groundwork.
so once he grabs them and makes it back to her, hands it over for her to take, it's out of his hands. ] You sounds just like my sister, you know that? [ he sighs, rolls his eyes a bit dramatically, but there is a fond smile still wrapped up with it all. ] No, I know. And it's not too much like that- for once, it's not just me. I like working in teams. [ jayce and claude are capable people, more than capable, but sam also means steve. also means wanda, and nat, and stephen, because they are a team. more so it feels like now than ever really before.
as she goes to sit up on the counter, sam takes a long swig of his beer - he could pull up a bar stool if he wanted, take the spot on the same counter right next to her, but for now he's pretty content to stand. it's how he catches the small smile on her face and how he's fully aware she very much does not answer the question and instead asks one of her own.
one that sam follows, and oh yes, oh he definitely can tell where this is going. ] Often enough, yeah. He's a really good guy, like him a lot. [ a beat, and then sam can't help the way his smile breaks into an all out grin around his next sip from the bottle. ] Why?
[the comment about sounding just like his sister earns sam one of those ‘sisterly’ looks, glancing at him with the sort of judgement one could only take from a sibling. that kind of comment is him deflecting the truth in her statement, isn’t it? at least he is aware of the situation, even if he needs people to constantly remind him to look after himself.
but, he’s right. he does well working in teams, and the summoned community is that, at least, a community, so he doesn’t have to go through this all on his own. whatever it is constitutes working as a representative of the faction.]
Don’t spread yourself too thin.
[that’s all she will say about the matter, because she is in no position to berate sam. he’s a grown ass adult who can make his own grown ass decisions. maybe her sounding just like his sister and asking him to look after himself will remind him to do so.
at the ‘why’ question, she shrugs, mostly trying to ease her shoulders than anything else.]
He asked me if he could call me his girlfriend. [—it feels so silly, but wanda hasn’t had the chance to feel silly.] I told him he could.
[an official title, then. she avoids eye contact, because maybe sam will make this embarrassing. even if it was obvious to everyone else that there was something meaningful between wanda and matt — fact is, she herself was adamant about using labels, always, especially with what happened with vision. she swings her feet for a moment, trying not to hit the cupboard with the back of her heels.]
Don’t make it a big deal. I just — wanted you to know. That he’s part of us, from our world. So.
[sam already did things like include matt into invitations, despite now knowing what matt is capable of as a vigilante.]
We should keep him in the loop about things, about our group. We can trust him.
[ sam laughs at the look he gets, hands going up a bit defensively. alright, alright, yeah, he gets it. he should know better than anyone that wanda will be watching for all that, because she has that energy, that focus, on the people she cares about. he's no exception. ]
I won't, scout's honor. [ a beat, and then because he knows she's going to keep giving him that look, he follows with: ] I promise.
[ and then they're moving on, because it's as simple as that. sam's attention is back on wanda now, comfortable and easy - because things can be that way while they're here, and that's something he won't take for granted. because he does have a sister, which means he knows what those smiles mean, what that easy shrug means. sam is still grinning around the mouth of his bottle of beer, because wanda says girlfriend and i told him he could and it might be a little silly, but sam is going to support silly. he's going to fully and wholeheartedly encourage silly, when they all know what waits for them back home. ]
And are you gonna call him boyfriend? Or are you taking this more casual? [ it's not an attempt to make this embarrassing exactly, but there is a joking sort of tone to it. a teasing that sam feels like he can have, because wanda is avoiding his eye contact and kicking her feet and they are in his home. a home. a regular house talking about regular things with someone he does consider like a sister. a sister.
loss is never easy, ever, and vision isn't far from his mind in this moment. still, he wants to celebrate this, so he's going to look absolutely offended at the concept he could make this a big deal. ]
I would never. Now, Steve might make things super weird, what with his whole backwards view on dating and all that, and I'm guessing Matt knows what he's getting into where we're all concerned, so. [ okay, okay, he can chill. the dramatics of it all fall away after a moment. a pendulum that sways back and forth. ]
I'm happy for you, Wanda. This is great. And as long as he makes you happy- that's all I care about. [ a smile, one that's genuine and honest and exactly that - happy. ] Now, we're gonna have to talk about bringing a lawyer into the family, but if you trust him, then I do too.
[wanda would very much like to say something about how she's not taking this more 'casual', but it feels redundant. the avengers—those who were close to her, especially in their years as fugitives—must be well aware that if there is one thing about wanda, is that she commits to a feeling. should she be cross at anyone in the quinjet, they would feel that anger strongly until it finally dissipated after an apology or after talking it out; when she felt sadness from her losses, it was a dire task to get her out of that heavy cloud of sorrow; when she loves, she loves entirely, in her own quiet ways, and there was always a certainty that—no matter what—wanda never felt anything halfway.
so, there's no need to confirm what sam already knows.]
Steve made it less weird. [take that, sam] But I think he's just catching up with the times about everything in the twenty-first century. [or... take that, steve? making light of all her big brother figures. wanda does make eye contact at this point.] I think he and Matt drink together sometimes.
[that reminds her of the beer in her hands, but she doesn't bring it to her lips. instead, she just smiles, a thank you on the tip of her tongue, though she knows she need not say it.
instead,]
We both know that even if we had him talking law-stuff to us, we'd never listen, right?
[because that's just how it is with the avengers, though a terrible quality to boast about.]
